Re: RFPs
Don't forget the "we've come up with an arbitrary scenario to judge all submissions against and will decide on contract award based on that". The scenario doesn't resemble the actual ask, so guess how that'll go. Or, my personal favourite, from an actual customer: they issued an RFP based ...

Re: The lawn mower thread
How big is your lawn? We've got a leccy one with a cord and it does everything we need. Paid something like £50-75 four years ago. Only had to replace the blade a few times and had my sparky neighbour redo the lead as it was broken.

Re: Book review thread
I didn't gel with The Diamond Age at all, from memory. Not sure why. I can imagine why. It is very different to his other books and, so far, runs at a much slower pace. When I started it I was almost ready to put it down after the first few chapters - it didn't click at all, but I persisted (helped...

Re: Book review thread
Started Neal Stephenson's "The Diamond Age" and it is very enjoyable, but oh my how the advent of the internet has aged the book. The nano technology and smart devices are as clever as you'd expect, but when there is the mention of tapes as a data storage medium and a lack of connectedness...

In the same category: spotted a Q5 with the official Audi roofbox. I was sure because on the box was a rather large pair of chrome Audi rings.
Car was obviously being driven badly.

Re: Networking your home
I had homeplugs and found they occasionally needed resetting (just off and on again) - Google Wifi has been rock solid and faster. I have my NAS plugged into one of the nodes by a cable and all the devices in the house (e.g. the telly) can see it and play films etc. Interesting. I've never had to r...

Re: Networking your home
Unless you really need it, I'd use the homeplug type kit. No drilling, no running wires. They just work and performance is good enough that it doesn't feel like a compromise in normal use.
