Tesla showed that electric cars are feasible by releasing cars with great performance and sufficient range. VW forced the hand of the car market by cheating emissions bringing mainstream electric cars forward by probably a decade.

I think Tesla has some work to do before the Tesla "Badge" is on a par with Porsche. Winning Le Mans would be a good start for example
Does winning Le Mans carry much kudos these days? Toyota have won it for the last 2 years and i don’t consider them particularly benefitting from it.

Tesla aren’t racing cars, they do these stunts to respond to unfounded criticism. It’s one thing I like about Tesla - they can do these things quickly.

Electric cars are slow.... here’s ours beating a Lamborghini....

Electric cars don’t have any range.... ours car do 300miles to a tank....

Electric cars are slow around race tracks...

As an aside, will be interesting to see how their quoted range for the ID3 models pans out...

So are you saying you think the Tesla Badge is on par with the Porsche Badge ?

I think they’ve quite cleverly found a niche that the likes of Porsche couldn’t, and in that market are far stronger than Porsche.

The sort of people who owned Priuses 10 years ago because it was seen to be the environmentally friendly choice, despite being able to happily pay £100k for a car. Its a growing market too.

Not the first time I've read this, but I don't agree. I think performance electric cars would've happened anyway. All Tesla has done is grab some early share of the inevitable market.
As others have said, Tesla forced the market to respond. I don't think it's coincidence that a few years after Telsa released their patents & plans to the open market, the big manufacturers started turning up to the party. It must have shaved years off development times.

It's been mentioned before, that the theory behind Teslas plan all along has been to kick-start the electric car revolution, before quietly bowing out once everyone is on board & then flog their batteries to everyone, as by then, they'll be market leaders.

Ok fair enough - I accept that my opinion was probably wrong on this point.

But if you look at those surveys that remove emotion from the decision, Tesla rate far, far below others for actual reliability (faults) of their cars over a 3 year period. Rather than how well Tesla is liked by said owners (and how many of _those_ surveys were self-selecting?)

Look, if you’re not going to double down on your opinion, argue the toss endlessly and eventually resort to calling everyone a cunt, then I’m afraid you’re going to have to leave.

I'm glad we agree on that.

Less than successful attempt at an official lap record

Apparently they've more time booked in October, whether the weather will let them do a record will be up to Elon's orbital canon.
