Baggy Boxsters

Many many moons ago HardboiledPhil let me drive his Boxster and very nice it was too. My Golf goes back in March so thought I would revisit this and maybe get one after xmas. Is the 3.4 worth the extra money? What options to look for and is the sports exhaust all that sporty?

Links to the best info appreciated or if you have knowledge post away.

I say shonky old Porsches are the perfect replacement for a Golf R estate. Buy the first cheap one you see on eBay.

Baggy Cayman looking cheap too.

I like the golf, don't need an estate with no pooch these days tho.

3.4s have a propensity to score their bores, hence the recommendation of a 3.2 to DTEN on his thread recently. All Cayman Ss are 3.4s.

I am happy to have high miles with decent history.

Its funny my golf doesnt need a service for 2 years or 16000 miles from new - doesnt sound good for the later owners.

Depends if you want a pristine 986 or a saggy 987. Although my budget expanded after I tried both! ‘06 is the sweet spot of later generation IMS and not bore-scorey 3.4.

I think I rode in Phil’s Boxster at an evo meet as a teenager around 15-20 years ago

I drove Phils Boxster at the EVO triangle, was quite impressed with the over all package but at the time was a little put off by the fact it didn't seem any quicker than my DC2. I get it now, having driven a few more Porsche #fanboy

As part of my weekly AutoTrader sweep I contemplate Boxsters, then S2000, then boring estate cars, then luxo barges..

Am I imagining it or were the later 986s a sweeter drive than the early 987s ?

Lighter and less understeery IIRC ?

I still fancy a seal grey 986 with amber lenses.

There's differing opinions on which engines are the most chocolatey, but generally the 3.2S is regarded as the most reliable.

Mine's a 2005 55 with the upgraded IMS bearing. If you find one you like and can get the engine number, make sure it falls after 61504715.

Don’t worry about the IMS. Have it scoped for bore score. Enjoy.

Saw an advert for a local car today.
3.2s man 2001 88k 4 pzeros looked tidy.
No history hardly but mots had no fails.
Low owners.

Anyway decided to go look and it's gone but I'm on the list should it fall through.

4k.

Seemed reasonable?

Bargain. You should be hoping it falls through.

If it falls through you'd have to wonder why though and go through it with a fine toothed paranoid comb.
