Finally, Boris has been given the unequivocal message that the government can’t do what it likes just because it has a big majority.

This is something the Tories can learn from before the next election. I can see the knives coming out now; here’s hoping for a replacement PM who is a much more thoughtful and reasonable person. Not sure that person exists in the party, but we’ll see. Could this have been the real reason Sunak came back from California?

There's no one in the frame to to take over who could be called a decent human being. Gove's a coke-head, Patel's a psycho, Raab and Truss have IQs that struggle to exceed the ambient temperature. Oh and there's Sunak who conveniently "forgot" his wife was literally richer than the Queen. Hopefully, this will be the start of the Tory party implosion.

Yup. You can see hints that the knives have been coming out already, but you're right, the options for a viable replacement are not looking great (probably even if you extended the invitation across party lines!).

I think that's true for all sides duncs - Modern politics, much like a lot of modern life is so filled with hyperbole that ANY prospect's, previously minor failings, are going to be blown out of all proportion that no-ones going to look appealing, be that a Labour Leader, Conservative leader etc.

We really are into "we must settle for the least bad option" territory

You're only looking at Boris's patsies there, other than Gove who made his ambitions clear ages ago. I agree that nobody in Boris's government has been an obvious successor - though don't write off Sunak who has managed to keep himself distanced from Boris's regime in people's minds - but the rest of the parliamentary party has plenty of members.

I'm afraid I'm as pessimistic about any potential replacements as Andy, and we're probably looking at it from completely opposing positions!

The thought of Gove...<shudders>

I guess for people who really hate the conservatives Gove is probably a good choice as he is unelectable and would guarantee that they'd be out come next GA. :-D

I think the best that could happen is Boris resigns, as finding 15% of the Conservative MPs required to challenge him would be difficult.

The Shropshire by-election was won by apathy and anger by the Conservative voters plus tactical voting by Labour supporters: the Conservatives are still going to win the next GE imho, as voters will return to their respective parties.

And out of BJ or KS; I’d still pick BJ..

David Frost’s resignation is interesting. I don’t think the public as a whole will care greatly about an unelected member of government departing but it shows how little cred Boris has with his own acolytes.

Wonder how much longer he staggers on until he finally falls over. The BBC August article references some of what he wrote in his resignation letter and it makes for scary reading. If his aims align with many Tories, then the sooner they're out the better.

That's the thing that pisses me off. "So and so is boring therefore I won't vote for them." Are you fucking insane? This is precisely the kind of thinking that got us into this mess. It's politics, not The Only Way Is Westminster.

"Say what you like about Hitler, at least he has a personality and he really knows how to get a crowd going."

Indeed, I'm not sure dependable should be seen as a negative trait for a Prime Minister.

I know it was, Simon but there genuinely are people out there who have the power of the vote and think that.

I do somewhat believe that it was a business meeting because some of their decisions can only be explained by being drunk.
