They have an oil-cooled coolant header tank. Well, Dave's does.

Interesting thread here suggesting the oil coolers can be brand new, and be buggered.

So if you get the old one off (apparently do-able without dropping the engine, but way easier if you do...) and a pressure test shows it's buggered, get the replacement pressure tested too before it's fitted.

(assuming I'm not mixing parts up or something)

Fingers crossed, and all that.

That’s a lot of oil in a short space of time, is it only oil in the coolant tank you can see ?

Dave!

Yep, doesn't appear to be any coolant in the oil.

Arse. As SJ says, worse case is a V8 swap, and it may be something less serious. 🤞

Balls. That's very disappointing, Rev. Fingers crossed it can be fixed without junking the motor.

Can it physically lose that much in a head crack or HG? The oil cooler rings more true to my amateur mind and seem to be a common issue.

Back in the day the oil cooler failed on my 2.8i Capri and did the same as in the pic. I made the mistake of taking the heads off first though.

That’s a very good thing. Can the oil cooler be tested in-situ ?

No, it’s attached to the gearbox end of the block.
