Yep. I remember that phone call well!

I'd called up a local authority to enquire about some highway data or something. Anyway, bloke said that the person I needed to speak to wasn't in so gave me his name and number. "Bernard Brownsword." Silence from me as I was both weighing up whether he was taking the p1ss, and simultaneously trying desperately not to laugh.

So I repeated it back to him, straining to keep it together -"so that's Bernard. Brown...Sword?" Cue the entire office behind me cracking up laughing.  He was absolutely insistent though..and also trying not to laugh.

Two days later I spoke to the man himself, and it was really, really, really difficult asking to speak to Bernard Brownsword when he answered. Not helped, again, by the entire office behind me sniggering loudly enough for him to hear. He sounded like a man who'd spent his entire life having people laugh at his name, the poor bastard.

I haven't met Stefan personally but he was quite a famous footballer from ze Fatherland. I have met a Michael Hunt through work and he introduced himself as Michael and not Mike for obvious reasons!

Ulick McGee was a well known social commentator in Ireland back in the 70’s and 80’s... ;)

I’ve never heard Gee used over here so I presume it’s Dublin slang only

The best one we found at work was a chap called Kamal Fucker. And I’m pretty sure that’s how his surname was spelt as well. He’s left now, so I can’t check.

We have an Allan Partridge in our team. Lovely chap.

And I know an Anita Knott.
