Speculate away. Cannot think what the motive for this would be from someone who although comes across as a bit barking / eccentric I would consider to be quite a straight laced down to earth fella.

This story has been around for a few weeks at least. Very odd; if he had a piece of paper which he claimed was an Irish licence but was in fact a forgery or fake (as the Irish licensing authority have apparently confirmed) then he's going to struggle to prove he's not guilty.

From the Sun - https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/7 ... e-licence/
"It is thought he wanted to add other driving categories, such as lorries.
When DVLA officials checked the Irish licence they discovered it was not genuine, it is alleged"

Why would you - if you knew it was a fake - then apply to add categories to it?

He applied to add the categories to his UK licence based on being qualified in Ireland to drive them. As evidenced by an apparently fake licence.

Why can't I work out what "far welter'd" means?

Is it some sort of Northern bread product?

I read somewhere that he's elected to have the case heard at Crown Court, is he hoping to get out on a technicality ?

So after a bit of reading, I think they’re accusing him of having used a fake Irish licence to obtain a UK licence, and then when he’s subsequently come to add new categories, they’ve checked his Irish licence and the Irish equivalent of the DVLA have said the licence doesn’t exist. I think.

If you can drive your dad home from the pub they issue licences in the sticks in Ireland lol.

They probably gave him some sort of honorary licence for road racing so i'm sure he'll be alright .

We haven't done that since the 60's...

Also, far welter'd...

"It comes from when a sheep with a full coat falls onto its back and can't get up again. You say it's far welter'd.

"It means stuck, trapped in a tricky situation or in a rut, something you can't get out of."

Aaahhhhh! In Yorkshire we'd say Riggweltered (in Wales I suppose it'd be easy shag  )

I wonder if he’s been caught up in a scam and he wasn’t aware the Irish license is fake.

My Irish mate reckons there’s a fair chance it’s a legit licence but the Irish authorities just forgot to put it on the system 😂
