To be fair they are not exactly competitors based on the budget alone

When I saw that price and low miles I was thinking a few thousand miles

Remember when it was a struggle to get £5k for these? I still wouldn’t pay £5k for one now, never mind £55k.

5k maybe for a shagged 840, the 850csi is a different beast.

Is it 11 times as good?

I don’t know?
I had a thing for the 850csi when I was a youngster, sadly never been in an 8’er at all, I saw one the other week and it screamed 90’s, it looked good!
Is there a cooler 90’s BMW?

OK, £7k. Tops.
I could think of probably at least 100 cars I’d buy for £55k before I even thought about an 8 series.

I like the 8 series a lot, but £55k? No one really wanted the 50s when they were £10k - And look at those ghastly little wheels.

It seems there are still examples sitting comfortably in the £10-15k...

The late 840 was meant to be better anyway wasn't it? Almost as quick but with a lot less weight up front.
I like them too, but can't imagine ever paying more than 5k for one.

Indeed, mik
Anyhow, where would you keep 100 cars?

For £55k, I'd get a cheaper 840i and a tatty facelift E39 M5. I'd post them to Flewy and ask him to make me a slower 5 series and a faster 8 series.
The change would be spent on hookers and Haribo.

But but but... it has the same steering wheel and gear lever from the £600 e36 323i I had for a while - how could you not want it?!

Nice but from that era I prefer R129, maybe SL600 or SL60 AMG.
