Anyone else watched this yet?

I watched the first twenty minutes then recorded the rest but it looked like his usual mad challenge and he is good to watch.

Will likely watch teh rest tonight after bonfire/fireworks.

It was good, but a bit lighter on detail than I would've liked.This is the 1st Guy Martin show that MrsREV has stopped watching, though, so maybe it was too technical for her.

Yeah. I was hoping for a bit more detail on the gearbox and engine mods.Alson an explanation of why they ditched the front bumper and went back to a standard one (I suspect cooling)

I liked it, but it would have been nice to have a little more than some camcorder footage of re-engineering the whole van to move the engine to the middle! I’d have happily lost the eye coordination bit for this!

I guess that would make it far to expensive to film as it was presented as Guy just building it whenever time permitted over a long period.

Nice to see Dale and Andy on't telly. Came across well.

I think you are correct, looking at the huge cooling ducts/charge cooler type thing that went in the engine bay with piping back through.

I quite liked the standard look whilst it whizzed round.

I am trying to remember how close to ten minutes flat Sabine got in a more or less standard Tranny on TG years back. Clarkson had been trying to get sub 10 in a diesel Jaaaaag then Sabine was tutoring him and said she could do the time in a van. They got fairly close from memory after chucking out the jack, spare tyre etc.

Reading the article, the 9.58 record set in a T5 was also effectively a standard van, just stripped of extra seats etc. It rather implied in the program that it was modified.

It was enjoyable but clearly it was Guy Martin that was the weakest link which is unusual. Wonder how quickly his co-driver or other tutor could go!

Sabines lap was bridge to gantry not a full lap, although I'd still have expected guys van to be able to knock massive amounts off.

If have thought with all his bike racing he would be very quick to pick up the track details, and pretty easy to learn the basic layout from countless videos and games which have had accurate layouts for years ( yes I know it's no substitute for being there, but if you have a basic understanding of which corner follows which it has to help the time you do spend there )

As others have said, I would have preferred more technical stuff and less of the driver training stuff, must admit I nearly nodded off at that bit, but I guess like his other programs they're trying to create general entertainment than a full on nerd fest.

Not convinced the brake disk think wasn't a bit of tv added drama. Firstly you can usually feel a crack instead of suddenly noticing when taking a wheel off, and secondly the bells may have been custom but they're pretty likely to have been made to accept an off the shelf rotor. If there's anywhere in the world you're likely to find a bolt on brake rotor it's probably within ten miles of the Nurburgring!

I only watched the last 30 mins

Seemed pretty easy to beat the time, in that he did it during his warm up lap..

Remember, the plan was to do 2 steady laps to get dialled in, bring it back to the pits for a check then do a banzai run, which the fire at the end of the 2nd lap scuppered. There's more potential in the van, and probably in Guy's driving.

Disagree with that. We crack a disk on the race car a couple of meetings ago. Only found when we took the wheels off. Didnt present any symptoms.

The rotors will have been off something but the key was it was a sunday afternoon and all the suppliers were closed.

Yep they were saying on the second lap before he had the engine issues he was 10 seconds up on the previous lap. Hopefully they will have another crack at it.

When they started the programme, my eldest was saying "why are they only using a 3.5 litre V6?". I just looked at him and said: "Remind me again what engine layout the GTR uses?"

"Yeah, but a V8 would still be cooler"

Or even more relevant, what does the Ford GT use!

Enjoyed that, did wonder if GM had showed the same interest in professional coaching like the mental exercises at the peak of his bike racing how much better he could have been.

Nevertheless he is a bloody legend for doing what he wants, when he wants and giving it 100% at that time of his choosing.

I assume you would have taken the wheels off and had a quick check of the brakes at some point before driving hundreds of miles to a different cpu try to try and break a lap record?

The cracked disks I have had have been very noticeable, but on a track car I concede they may have cracked on the cool down from the last heat cycle and not been driven on since.

I would still have found space to take a spare set of discs and pads on a Nurburgring record attempting lap though

Given when we go 20 miles from the workshop to knockhill we take spare discs i'd tend to agree

He spent a week there with Bren (The Baron), Andy and few others back in 2006. He's been back a few time since too.
