Just catching up on the new Fifth Gear (ep.3) on Quest, where they’re testing new hot hatches; I was shocked to discover that the fuel tank capacity in the new Civic Type R is a mere 46L. Seems rather small for a performance car.

Even my Integra has a 50L tank.

Having said that it’d seem the new CTR can average 37 mpg whereas my DC2 averages 28.5 mpg in the real world.

I think the tank in my Saab is a 75L, not sure about the S60 but I do know that my old 760 took over £100 when petrol was less than a pound a litre. My old diesel cavalier had a huge tank too. I think it is because fuel costs have risen so much it would make the average person cry to drop £140 odd per tank.

I mentioned my GLC's 50l tank in the fleet running report thread. Waaay too small for what it is and Milton Keynes is draining the fuel at an alarming rate...

My M140i is 52l and requires constant refilling!

My mower has such a small fuel tank, I need to refill every time I use it.

I've just put 38.8 litres in the 40 litre tank of the Mini.

Mine lasts about 2-3 mows. That's way more fuel efficient than the old mower, as well as being nicer to use, and having the ability to actually start (which you'd hope, what with it being brand new and all).

And the VW XL1 apparently, according to that chap on Twitter with his experience of it recently.

My A2 has a 34l tank (the A2 3L had a 20l tank).

The same mower would last for the whole season without needing more than one top-up at my old house. So perhaps your edit has some bearing It's not that massive, to be honest, it's more that I abuse the mower and run it across bushes and so on as I go.

Old school beemer I can squeeze 73litres into if I play chicken with the angry orange light long enough.

You're not wrong mate - I reckon for about 90% of my daily driving, I'm on full bore acceleration. Currently returning less than 30mpg for a 220d

Can’t remember the size but it gave the Evo V and VI a 150 mile range.

Incidentally, they had something like a 5k miles service interval too.

I used to get 180 miles out of my 65 litre R33 Skyline tank and it was a pain to fill as if you squeezed the trigger too hard the pump would cut off, no matter what you did with the nozzle.

How can that be? A car that size with a 50l tank. It’s almost like an afterthought for the designer. Same with the Civic, it isn’t a small car.

The petrol ones have a 66l tank...

I'm guessing, but I'd bet there's some rule around vapour emissions or something from tanks that's driving the smaller sizes.

E30 m3 has a 55l main tank ( like all e30s ) plus a 15l long range tank in the boot behind the rear seat. Which if you could fill it completely ( which is a pain in the arse to do ) probably gives it the longest potential range of all our cars if driven sensibly. Has a full size spare wheel and probably the biggest boot of the lot too

E36 62l, e36 compact 52l, clk 62l, mk2 golf 55l, rover metro 35l.

If you really want to win this thread the tell us how much it costs to fill. The LC for example would be £200 to fill on current uk fuel prices and I bet you pay £20 tops.
