World Mental Health Day

Post by Jimmy Choo »

Yesterday was World Mental Health Day. I've been surprised by how many people have come out of the woodwork with mental health issues. Obviously, I've suffered and my marriage ended in for about a fortnight before I got my anxiety under control and my head out of my arse and we reconciled.

What's pleasing is that this seems to be something that is now acceptable to discuss and the stigma that was attached to mental health seems to be declining.

One of the actual benefits of having depression is a lot of people do indeed come out of the woodwork and share their own experiences - makes you feel like less of a failure, basically.

Also very pleased to read (if I'm reading it correctly) that you and Kathryn are back on the level, that's tremendous news.

yep - Very glad to hear Jimmy...

Suffered with depression for about 15 years off and on. Various counselling sessions have helped over the years but I know I need to go again.

I know what I need to do to be happy but I just can't bring myself to do it...

Yeah I think getting men to open up about mental health is still hard but it seems to be getting better.

I've always been very supportive of other people in my life when they're struggling while simultaneously refusing to acknowledge I had any problems.

It took my friends and family basically having an intervention for me to go get some help. Feeling better than I did before, even if every time I address one problem it just highlights something else that's broken. I'm looking at it like one of my shitty car projects at the moment .

Yes, we are. Apparently SSRIs help make me less of a cunt and more like the man she fell in love with. The fact that she's not permanently pissed off with me makes her more like the woman I fell in love with.

Pleased to hear that, Jimmy. It brings a lot of virtue signallers out for the day, but some long term recognition would be a lot better.

Good news JC. Living or even just dealing with someone who is depressed and or anxious is very tough, I'm glad you've found a way through it together.

Some good chaps on here helped me through my impressively dramatic episode 8 years(!) ago. Mostly listening as I rabbited on, and on... think I'm calmer these days and haven't had a significant recurrence since.

Every year it's being more and more talked about I find. Given how it's the greatest threat to life men in particular face up to a certain age that's a great thing. I certainly didn't know what I was dealing with until a severe problem struck, now more people may recognise it earlier.

One benefit of modern day psychology is that I now know exactly why I'm such an argumentative cunt. I'm not sure what excuse the rest of you have.

I always thought it was genetic in Rev's case anyway - not sure what psychology has to do with it. Either that or living in unsafe proximity to the malign influence that is Liverpool

I've spent most of my life living within about 20 miles of Liverpool. Whenever anyone asked me where I was from, I'd say "near Manchester".

No worries if you'd rather not say.
