Jesus wept - I remember when sub-8 was a thing for road cars, that's loopy.

I know Bellof set the record on a longer layout but apparently it only adds 10 seconds or so. So say his (from memory) 6.30 time can have 10 seconds lopped off it, and road cars nowadays are within 30 seconds of a massively talented racer in a 956.

Blimey.

I think modern tyres are the key to these amazing time, that GT3 just showed insane commitment to corners. Didn't look like it had a cage either.

Look forward to seeing who topples the Nio's road car record.

6.11 for Bellof, my memory ain't what it used to be, odd that  - so with the above logic, that's a like for like time of 6 minutes dead.

They ain't far off. Is that 10 seconds thing wrong?

I hope Porsche take that 919 Evo monster there and absolutely smash the record.

It's insanely good and things like the 911 GTx are, in my mind, perfectly acceptable "road cars" to chase 'Ring numbers in because people buy these cars as track toys with the convenience of being Road registered. To be clear I couldn't give a flying fvck for something like a hot hatch though, I'd rather have something fun to drive than something that was compromised in the fun department for a faster 'Ring time where I probably won't even get to drive the car once.

Someone explain some physics to me. Why is it that you can take a shitbox round the ring in 10 minutes (say a Ford Transit like on Too Gear years ago) but then a car which accelerates, brakes and corners multiple times faster, has double the top speed only manages to lap only 3 minutes faster?
Lap times make no sense to me.
How about not having a sig at all?

Energy required increases at the square of Velocity. Going a little bit faster requires a lot more energy.

MITO

My first car a Rover 213 had the horse power of 2 sunbaked dog turds, and the aero of a block of flats.
I could hit 100 MPG.

My 3rd car (Alfa SZ) has the slipperiness of a well lubed penis, and the power of a well built executive.
Maxed out at 153 MPH.

Because Physics.

That’s why I picked the GT2 RS and a Van, it has double the top speed, in fact over 100% more performance in all areas so why not half the lap time.

To be twice as fast EVERYWHERE the brakes need to be four times better, the tyre grip needs to be four times better.

That's why even the outright record by a thousand horsepower 917 on Slicks, is not twice as fast as van.

There's going to be enough interest around this to make a top gear/Guy Martin/Clarkson etc TV program about it.

It will be epic 😎

Does anyone have a time or the Carrera GT on its original tyres and the modern ones? It was said at the time that it made a huge difference to how the car handled and gripped so I wonder if some of the bigger leaps are more down to tyres than a refining of suspension and brakes etc.
