4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
Thanks both. Forgot to add two things.
Pick him up next Friday. Have a few bits to sort in the house and a few things to buy in readiness.
The other thing is that re-reading my posts in this thread with all the 'winning dogs' talk makes me sound like a poncey twat. We really, really don't give a shit about that stuff. To go full circle, we had tried to rescue for ages, but couldn't find a dog who would live well with Maya. So resigned to buying we agreed that we'd only give our money to someone who we could trust, and who looked after their dogs super well. Also CKCS have been known to suffer from a few problems - heart murmurs, episodic falling, problems with the eyes etc. All apart from the heart problems can be DNA tested and by seeking out a good breeder we've been able to find a provable bloodline without those issues in their genes, so he's 'clean' as it were. The heart murmurs can get even the best CKCS later in life, but he's not failed a test with his own line in 10 years, so odds on that pup will be trouble free for a long time, which is great.
Just wanted to clear up that I'm not the pretentious twat that I make out in this thread.

No worries there, it was all in the context of stress at not being able to adopt, avoiding dodgy breeders, and caring about the puppy's health.
For balance, I'll put that in forumese; no one thinks you're a poncey/pretentious twat because of this thread.

It was a JRT.
Hence I think they are TAUCs.
(Obviously I killed their family, but hey - it was ho-lee-fook sore )
Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
I may still cuddle the litttle TAUCs however. The nice ones.

Just reposting this because would be genuinely interested to know what experienced dog people on here think.

Thing is, Mrs SD has just accepted the job of her dreams, kind of. Working with special needs kids, to hours she’s been able to set (mornings basically) and term time only.
I was always led to believe that leaving a dog on its own for extended periods of time isn’t really on. Had two as a child, but my mother was always at home. They’re pack animals and very sociable and benefit from having owners around. This is why we haven’t already got one, as the wife wasn’t sure what she was doing work wise.
There are loads of dog walkers around here, and dog owners at work use walkers who come in mid-morning. So the dog, once settled, is at home alone for 3 hours, then the walker comes, then the dog is alone for another 3 hours till the wife arrives home.
Anybody do this? Plan would be to get an older dog I think, although the wife seems to prefer a puppy. Either way, my thought is perhaps to use extended school holidays (Easter maybe, summer obviously) and settle the dog before it then starts spending time on its own, but also building up the time the dog spends on its own bit by bit.
Interested in knowing how the forum dog owners organise it.

Get an ex racing greyhound, lovely dogs, really affectionate animals, easy to look after as they sleep 99% of the day and are used to being left in kennels so most likely not bothered about the gaps between anyone being there. Added bonus is house training is easy due to the kennel training they already have.
Edit to add- don’t expect to keep your sofa, greyhound stake their claim on those

Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
A puppy will need some dedicated time, will be more prone to chewing, having mad moments and cause more problems possible but you can mould them to how you want them to a certain degree.
It all depends on the dog, ours likes the living room as he will watch the world go by, keep watch and have a snooze. With how he is now I have no issue with leaving him for 12 hours if needed. Sometimes if he has been left all day we will come home, let him out for a wee and he just looks at us and says “no thanks, wait till bedtime”.
Having a set routine doesn’t help with some dogs as they expect something to happen, go a bit mad when it doesn’t and then become a pain. So ours have no feeding routine, walking routine or anything else etc. Means we don’t have to keep to any schedule or be inflexible. Some friends have to get breakfast ready at 7ish, must walk them on the school run etc etc.
We have a crazy dog lady walk ours once a week, he likes playing with a few of the other dogs, has a good sprint with them and likes to go a little mad. This is just in case the wife is swamped with child, work stuff and can’t get him all the walks he needs as he could do 12 hours a day if allowed.
Greyhounds are a good suggestion, soft fur, gentle, relaxed and if they have a good recall can be really impressive to see stretch their legs.
Dave!

Yep - my dad's side of the family have always had whippets, tremendous to see them give it a bit of a sprint.
Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
my brother has an ex racing greyhound - really good shout as you say they are mild mannered and used to being kennelled. Personally i cant see past my labs as a breed as the nature of the ones weve had have been fantastic.jamcg wrote: ↑Wed Nov 21, 2018 12:32 pm Get an ex racing greyhound, lovely dogs, really affectionate animals, easy to look after as they sleep 99% of the day and are used to being left in kennels so most likely not bothered about the gaps between anyone being there. I know a lot of people who work and use a dog walker. its good for them on a socialisation level as well to get used to other dogs.

We all know Labs are the best dogs mate. Anyone who says otherwise is a mental.

Our spaniel is at home (well, an outdoor kennel) all day on his own, Monday to Friday. He has been since he was around 5 months old. Before that we used to nip home at lunch to let him out for a wee and to play with him. He does get a proper run out in the morning and evening, and he spends most of the evening with us.
As long as the dog is comfortable being alone for a period of time, they will be fine.

Good luck for Friday Simon, hope it goes well.
A little update on Buster. I had my first time beating for a pheasant shoot a couple of weeks ago. The plan was to do a season myself before introducing Buster to a shoot. Well things have been accelerated a little and I’m taking him on the next shoot! Apparently the gamekeeper is happy for him to attend as in his words ‘dogs need to experience it, so it may as well be sooner rather than later’. It was fascinating watching the dogs working and I can only hope Buster is 20% the worker of the others.
As an aside, there was a German Shorthaired Pointer at the last shoot. I was astounded by how gracefully it covered open ground. I’d dearly love a pointer as a second dog

Thanks Mikey,
Have just got back from buying the last things we'll need. Dogs are an expensive business aren't they?!
