I'd happily not bother.

I just can’t get my head around the whole “towed up to a speed then drafting behind a car” thing. It spoils it for me - which is a pity because that’s an epic speed to push yourself to.
Imo the record should really be set without any intervention - just man/woman and their bike.

Except that would be impossible due to the gearing requirements alone

Get stronger legs or different gears then, I am with Rich, it is fantastic to watch but it should just be a person on a bike on a flat road with no wind assistance.

Could have a system like with freediving where there are assisted and unassisted categories.

That's kind of the point though isn't it? What is actually physically possible as a human?
Great achievement of course, but I don't quite "get" it.

Is there a different bike speed record for someone just on a "normal" production bike?

Yes, it’s 82.82mph. Boring.
Even the land speed record cars at Bonneville get pushed up to 100mph or so to get going.

Well we seem to have landed on Dave's Daily Trigger rather swiftly today

Just the opposite. I really don’t care whether it’s assisted or not. I don’t get the outrage. It still takes a massive amount of effort to go those speeds.

There's no outrage at all mate, slow your roll. It's just odd and I don't really get it. No-one's saying it's easy.

What is there to not get? There’s a record for unassisted, then there’s the outright record for a human powered vehicle. The tow vehicle is there to overcome the ridiculous gearing needed, and the drafting is used because adding streamlining to the bike is impractical.

I don't get that any form of cycling has an "assisted" category. However it clearly exists so I'll make my peace with it, don't worry.

A hot blonde chick pedalled a bike across a dried up lake bed, chasing a dragster at 180mph. How is any part of that not awesome?

And I'm back in the room

Well, I mean, if you're into that sort of thing:

I'm with Dave. Amazing achievement and I don't disregard land speed record cars for not being able to pull away from traffic lights without help.
That photo must have been taken a while ago or heavily photoshopped

ETA: ah, it's the girl on the right pictured above. Not the one who broke the record, centre...

I might be turning into a white-knight SJW - although I admit that's unlikely - but does ring true with you guys?
"As a result of her feat, there are calls for Guinness World Records to stop listing separate men's and women's records for the event."
Look, if a woman is the fastest, let her have the record in the Women's category! What's the point of changing that?

My apologies - my clear reference to "her driver" must have got encrypted after I pressed Submit
