It’s the CO % that it’s failing on. I’ve not got the numbers right to hand but IIRC the HC & lambda reading looked OK. I’ll go find the details later.

Air filter clean and no air leaks anywhere?

High CO2 will be it running rich iirc, when my 924 failed on high CO it was the big air pipe under to the engine that had split causing it.

You use an OBD dongle and an App like Torque or Car Scanner? Give you live graphs and historical logs on lambda readings etc - might be useful?

I thought co usually pointed to a cat on its way out or not getting hot enough.

Like you, I hate the emissions test, it’s the only thing someone fairly mechanically competent will have no clue as to whether it’s going to pass or not. Pretty much everything else you can see / feel / hear.

I’ve often considered a home tester but no idea whether any of them are accurate enough to be worth bothering with as I imagine the proper kit is absurdly expensive.

And the repeat fail yesterday. I’d not looked at these yesterday, they said it had failed and I just came straight home in a sulk :)

Much better than before, and the improvement from first to second fast idle makes me think Harrys’s on the money here and it just wasn’t properly warmed up. Or hadn’t finished adapting to not having a leaky exhaust any more.

This is giving me some comfort that maybe there’s nothing seriously wrong after all.

Why is the limit for the natural idle test different between the two tests?
How about not having a sig at all?

They’re so close that with a damn good thrash I bet it would pass.

Wonder if it was a bit sooted up from running with a leaky exhaust for a while as there is a vast difference between the two.

Mito beat me to it.

It would have been a PASS 2nd time round using the limit that was applied 1st time round (for the slow idle).

Ah yes, that’s definitely curious ! The engine rpm limits are different too.

I think I’ll drive it a bit over the weekend and try again on Monday. Book it in so I can deliver it to them nice and hot :)

Worth throwing some redex in and thrashing it through?

911 service time.

1 x headlight bulb
1x O/S track rod end.

Will do the gearbox oil as well as this time.

It and the van are not particularly practical, might get a normal car for a daily, not sure.

928 is in at Strasse for the rich running, power steering and a flex plate check. Wonder how much this is going to cost me?
If you get all wobbly-lipped about the opinion of Internet strangers, maybe it's time to take a bath with the toaster as you'll never amount to sh1t anyway.

Sundayjumper wrote: Sun Oct 18, 2020 11:08 am A bit of a long story, but I don’t have a Q7 any more. There were various niggles that the dealer was very good about sorting but it needed new rear brake discs and confronted with that - they’re carbon-ceramic and c. £4k EACH for new ones from Audi - the best option for everyone was just to give it back. I assume he’ll move it on through the trade somehow.

I’m not too bothered. The engine was fantastic but apart from that it didn’t feel special like a car originally costing over £100k ought to. The Touareg has a better ride and is only a touch slower, for a fifth of the price. The 7-Series has far more luxury and much nicer switchgear.

So I’m sticking with the Touareg & 7-Series for now. I’m going to keep an eye out for a Mercedes Viano V6 though. It’s the Merc equivalent of the Caravelle I had, higher spec all round, RWD with a 3.0 diesel V6; 220bhp standard but easily remapped to 275bhp. Sounds interesting.

Now that a second hand genuine maf has fixed the last of the running issues I don’t mind spending some money on it.

Had some OEM spec Eibach springs, Bilstein shocks, bump stops and HD top mounts fitted to the back of the Compact today.

It now sits level, rather than 3” too low at the rear, and on the 5 min drive back from the garage feels much better for it.

It had receipts in the history folder for springs five years ago, but the shocks were genuine bmw, so most likely the 19 year old 86,000 mile originals. No leaks, but not much resistance either...

I might even wash it for the first time since I bought it at the beginning of August.

New fuel level sender in the Defender, all back to normal again after it started to weep.

I intended to not use it for work this month but getting a hire car in Peterborough was pretty much impossible.

It now has a centre arm rest fridge/ food heater so I’m enjoying the more comfortable driving and vast array of cold or warm snacks on my slowly humbly travels 8-)

Dave!
