Great now it’s going to get passed round the web and every burglar will have a new technique.

"Ramblings" is the right word for that blog.

tldr - Their grand scheme was to make it look like a simple break-in without theft, while cleverly disabling the internal alarm systems, and covering their tracks as best as possible. Most likely, if I parked the car in front of our house the next night, they would break in again, without triggering an alarm.

Problem with free forum software is that features like that are introduced by 3rd party mods - each time I put a mod on it makes upgrades and maintenance more difficult as you need to maintain compatibility, etc. It's a PITA.

Paid software like vBulletin and InvisionBoard have it included which is probably why you've seen it on other forums.

That's stupid. The method they occasionally employ is to break the window, program a new key to the car and scarper, takes about thirty seconds to do. You think it's a break in without theft and get the window replaced. They return a few days later with their programmed key jump in it and drive off.

Security by obscurity isn’t security. It’s better that people know.

I expect the roof mounted alarm sensors on virtually every car that has a factory fit alarm has the wiring run up one of the a-pillars. I doubt it's the first time one has been disabled in this way.

In fact, I doubt the thieves expected it to auto call a call centre and probably scarpered when they realised that's what it was doing.

If they knew what they were doing they'd probably know it would throw some sort of error, I think the system actually prevented an attempted theft rather than it being some sort of clever attempt to disable the system to take the car away later.

They should have done it on a 3 year old+ BMW as no one bothers to renew the 3G subscription.
