All of the above, although I will say I can't remember the last time I encountered a car being driven well, let alone brisk enough to have some fun with. No bad thing I'll grant you, but another indication of the depressingly slow nature of modern traffic/drivers.
I had a lovely hour pottering about tonight, very warm so mesh gear and jeans, pretty sure I didn't crack 60mph the whole time.

Best day of the year and I was stuck on an 8 hour training course that overran, then the kids wanted to play Trvial Pursuit. No biking for me today.

I spent most of yesterday in the garden in just a pair of shorts, but today I had site surveys and meetings all day. The drive was the most fun bit!

I'm WFH 9/10hrs a day so I have to grab chances when I can, tonights ride was my daily exercise/fresh air in fairness. Couldn't even be bothered dragging the Triumph out, the Fazer is the nearest/easiest to get to.

Asking for a friend.... What’s the sort of budget & recommended bike for a total newbie looking to learn and initially use for not much more than commuting and short blasts?

How rude!
If your friend is over 24, then CBT + direct access is around £800. Not cheap, I know
As for the bike, some people here will probably suggest a 160bhp+ superbike. You can go down that route, but fun can still be had with much less power. Take your pick with whatever bike suits your style too.
Edit. Oh and riding schools can only tutor essential workers at the moment in England, probably the same in jockoland?

Thanks [mention]Marv[/mention]. So CBT & Direct Access is still a thing, that’s good to know. I got as far as a multi-page PDF with may flowcharts on it from the government and gave up on page 2 I think.
For commuting and short trips I was thinking something more upright and “practical” would be a better bet but that might not be right. I was thinking superbikes would be a way off, so my initial searches knowing absolutely nothing were taking me to things like Yamaha FZ-07, Suzuki GW250, KTM Duke
Yes, I’m guessing its still locked-down up here too at the moment.

Mike my bike journey was ar50, rd50 with a bore kit, rg125 with a power blank, then nothing until I did my test which was a 600 kwak with 100bhp. I had more fun on these than anything else and my aging k7 gsxr probably does 200 mph.
