Movie scene & music combo

Spurred on by the two elder DJlets always commenting on the point in the Frozen soundtrack where the ship sinks, I got to thinking about what movie scenes I always see in my mind's eye when I hear the music. The number one for me is the death of sergeant Elias in Full Metal Jacket.

The (fully intended) juxtaposition between the visuals and the music are a powerful trigger (no pun intended).

Every scene of every Wes Anderson film.

Especially the ping island rescue in The Life Aquatic.

A.M.180 by Grandaddy and 28 Days Later.

Mad Max 2 and Mars from the Planet Suite. It’s not actually the same music but it’s close enough to remind me.

Loads from Tarantino movies.

Moonage Daydream and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Opening sequence from The Italian Job with Matt Munroe

2001 space station scene with The Blue Danube suite

All Star Wars films that open with that 'duh-der!' as the words 'Star Wars' first appear on the screen - that's the 'here we go!' thing for me.

I think Sgt. Elias was Platoon, not FMJ.

Mad Max Fury Road is one of those films where I can pretty much name any given scene from a snippet of the soundtrack. I suppose that's why Miller reckoned it worked well as a silent film.

The Sucker Punch soundtrack can do that too. But it is a terrible film, with exceptionally well done action sequences that cannot elevate it from being a terrible film.

i did wonder what he meant but it didn’t trigger that it was that!

Anyway, Adagio for strings makes me think Kevin and Perry... 😀

The de Niro stare in Goodfellas when Sunshine Of Your Love comes on and he realises there's a bit of whacking to do 8-)

Weirdly as much a I love Scorsese movies and how good the soundtracks are I never get the connection between the movie and the music outside of watching the film.

Actually there are two exceptions. Sid Vicious My Way at the end of Goodfellas and The Dropkick Murphys I'm shipping up to Boston from the beginning of The Departed.

Anyone else remember that "Tour of Duty" TV series from the late 90s?

I still always picture the opening titles when I hear "Paint it black"

Yeah - Tour of Duty was ace.

I remember a hilarious article in some computer mag about the show, might have been written by Charlie Brooker?

Tour of Duty (or "Platoon B" as it was mysteriously renamed in Denmark) was a staple for the teenage me.
