The DIY/General tool thread.

Just a recommendation here. I've been completing a job on the car and needed to drill out some large rivets. Despite copious amounts of oil to stop heat building up, my drill bits were blunt in minutes. Bought a set of Makita and they were the same despite being recommended. Eventually bought some Erbauer cobalt tipped ones and they tore through them like butter!

When you finally succumb to buying proper drill bits your life changes, and by proper i'm talking about 25+ quid each bit. I have some solid carbide bits that are ridiculous, they will drill through stainless like its butter but they're also ridiculously easy to snap sadly.

This is when you get every size in 0.2mm increments as giving it a wiggle to open it up a bit is expensive šŸ˜‚

Ah, these were only a fiver each, I read about carbide one's snapping easily. I had the seat out of the car and needed to get it back in so went for the strongest but also reliable!

My wedding ring is tungsten carbide. Not a scratch on it - as you would imagine.

That's a flex... But do you walk around with your left hand dragging on the floor? Would be pretty heavy no?

It’s not - they really aren’t expensive  I’ve only been married once; but I’m on ring no4 (5?) due to breaking them, losing them etc. Mrs mik rolls her eyes when Italk about my wedding ring….

Heavier than some metals but not so much you notice. They won’t be scratched by anything other than a diamond, but they can snap if struck.

Edit: and they tarnish/dull over time, and you need diamond paste to polish them. Normal jewellers rouge has pretty much fook hall impact.

I do very much enjoy the techy / ā€œtoolā€ aspect though. 8-)

I was intrigued so I googled the density, more dense than silver less dense than platinum. Similar to gold (depending on karat). Here endeth the public service announcement.

Titanium here, slightly misshapen from an overexcited gym session.

I've not worn it for months as I nearly tore my finger off, desleeved myself so it'll be a ring tattoo , not that kind, when I get round to it.

Silicon ones are the way to go.

Titanium ring here as well, with a band of white gold inset into it. We'd better not get fat Dave because titanium rings can't be re-sized

Aslong as they don't make the wedding belt it'll be fine šŸ˜‚

Back to the other tools for a second, if you don’t have one, get a Multi Tool. Brilliant versatile bit of kit.

I got this one and don’t know what I did before…

Mine's palladium. Couldn't stretch to platinum when I bought it. It is a bit scratched, and dull, bit that's the sign of time passing.

I'm just impressed that so many of you persuaded someone to marry you ;)

I have a little dewalt drill set, my first ā€˜decent’ set, and they’ve been very good. Lube and being sensible with the speed has seen them last very well. Great for normal steel, I bought them to drill out a few snapped exhaust studs.

They struggle a bit with the thick stainless I used for my throttle linkage, may have to buy a couple of fancy ones in certain sizes at some point.

My wedding ring was titanium and when I got sick and lost a load of weight it kept on slipping off. It should have been a sign, really.

It's currently in the bottom of Gloucester docks. Putting it there was cathartic.

Did it have a stripe of ginger inlaid?

No, but there was another ring that was titanium with an inlaid stripe of Korina. That was in the same throw.
