MiL has been in hospital this week, was allowed home yesterday, to a NIP. But is adamant she was not there. It's close to here, but not close to where she lives. To explain...

She lives in Epsom - that's the outer edge of SW London, but well inside the M25. We live in Sandhurst, just north of J4 of the M3. MiL bought her car from a Renault dealer in Aldershot, which is the other side of J4 of the M3 (i.e. further south), and always takes it back there for servicing.

On 14th Sep she drove to Aldershot and my wife met her there, for shopping / lunch while the car was being serviced. She went home again after collecting the car.

The NIP alleges 48 in a 40 on the A33 just south of Reading on the 16th Sep. She was at home in Epsom all day. And even if the dates were somehow garbled, Reading is not on the route between here / Aldershot / Epsom.

It smacks to me that someone cloned the reg while it was in for service. But the NIP seems to say they'll only produce evidence if it goes to court. MiL is poorly and Does Not Need this stress.

What do we do ?

Unusual for a NIP to not provide photo evidence (or a link to them). Have you seen the actual document?

Varies by force. Cleveland and North Yorkshire don’t provide evidence until court same as this

Yep, I've seen the doc. This is Thames Valley Police, FWIW.

Despite the letter saying they'd only provide photos in court, you can get to the photos via their website.

They have mis-read a W as an M and did not cross-check whether the Ford Transit in the photo is a Renault Captur per the reg they issued the NIP to.

So we just need to reply telling them to go away and do better.

"GTFO" was my first choice but that would be so much better coming from the magistrate when they try to take MiL to court and produce a photo of a Transit as their evidence

A couple of decades ago "I" got a fine for a yellow box junction offence after a misread number plate.

My letter to the relevant authority started "Dear Cretins..."

On the way back from my gran’s funeral I received a fine. I asked for a copy of their evidence, and they sent me a slightly grainy pic of a guy who looked like me, but older and fatter, driving my car. Despite the obvious dirt on the lens, I decided to pay up and take the points.

It must be fairly common as I've also had one, my car was my old m coupe and the car on the photo was a Porsche Boxster with one digit different in the registration number
