Does anyone have a smart kettle?

Doesn’t need to be anything particularly fancy, I just want to be able to set it to boil so it’s done by the time I get downstairs in the morning because I’m lazy af.

Doesn’t need a load of temperature settings, needs a manual mode so people can just fill it up and switch it on without having to go through menus.

I’m assuming they have a sensor of somesort so won’t boil dry or switch on if they’ve not been left empty.

It wouldn’t work for our kettle (yes it’s a Bosch @Rich B ) as it has a soft on/off switch, but you could just consider a smart plug if your existing kettle has a hard switch?

Someone else will be along shortly to suggest you fit a quooker* tap.

* other (usually cheaper) "instant" boiling water taps are available.

I have a smart kettle but I’ve never used the smart function. I think it does what you’re looking for as it has an iPhone app… I can download it and try it if you’re interested?

Does any kettle sold in the UK have a hard switch? Surely they all turn off automatically when boiled so they default to the off position for safety?

Since this thread amused me I mentioned it to my wife who said 'get a fast boil kettle'. I pointed out that any 3kW kettle boils at the same speed, though putting less water in might do the job. However, an induction hob can output more than 3kW (3.7kW is the most I could find with a quick google, but still 25% faster) so get a stove top kettle and a decent induction hob.

I recently cooked on a fancy Miele induction hob with self-sensing "zones" as opposed to designated "rings". It had their twinbooster tech for ferociously fast heating - upto 7.4kw.

We got a new Ninja kettle with different target boil temperatures. It'll also hold the temp you tell it to for 30 minutes or so. Nifty. Only paid £59 or so.

Ah, that's more like it - I thought there was scope for a lot more than 3.7kW when it has a 32A fuse.

Does the kettle have to be this shape to cover two rings?

7.4kw jobbies have been around for quite a while. It’s useful though as I frequently boil 15 litres of water although it still takes about 14 minutes.

Yep, the answer isn’t a £50 smart kettle - it’s a £1700 new hob!

I had a quick look on Argos before I posted my suggestion - it would appear there are still many (and besides I don't know how old Harry's kettle is).

£20 odd for a pair of smart plugs.

Leave smart plug off. Fill kettle and actuate go-switch. Retire to bed, make love to a beautiful lady, fall asleep and have sweet sweet dreams. Wake up refreshed, and activate smart plug (or use the timer on the smart plug to do it for you). Et voila.

The switch won't latch when the power's off on any I've used since maybe the 1980s.

yeah, like my (Bosch) toaster too - the switch won’t stay “on” without power on my (Bosch) kettle

Then you are correct - my suggestion won’t work.

The switch on my kettle stays on with the power off.

It’s a Breville and almost certainly was the cheapest in the shop/Amazon.

Is the correct answer. Ours is the dumbest kettle you can get. Boils quickly enough on the not quite top setting, and comically quick on the POWAAHHH setting (which I'm sure is 3.7kW)

Good modern property trend is to have a utility room upstairs (why do we take dirty clothes down and then back up again when clean?) with a sink/kettle/coffee machine installed, so obviously the best answer is to commandeer another room and make it a dressing/utility room.. failing that , just put a kettle (or teasmaid) upstairs.

Quookers are good though, and I think you can get cheaper alternatives now for £3-500.. Green tea with 85oC water is much better than 100oC though, breakfast has to be higher than 90.. @Gavster a subject for you to get creative with maybe?
