Alas, not that exciting

Current hosting is very expensive, back from the days when I needed decent resources due to the Lupo goons - but lazyness means I couldn't be bothered to move, and they were very good. However, I needed to rebuild anyway, so good time to move and update the forum software at the same time.

I've not tested the media links though...although the @mik seems to show...

So I didn't need to change my password from password123 to password234?

Neat? What we running now then? Modern linux underpinnings, current-ish phpBB?

I actually already know what OS the server is running, I can give you the street address of the datacentre it's running in, and yes, I know it's phpBB

I was more interested in whether we're on PHPBB 3.3 now (if so, I'd assume 3.3.15 because why not get the latest fixes) and I was being polite about my abject noseyness

Edited to add - although Mattys probably aware of it - no custom banner images at the top. But that's secondary to just getting the place running of course so I'm not surprised it's not been top priority

Seems faster since the upgrade. Does the forum hamster now have a carbon fibre wheel now?

@IanF they seem to embed OK for me? They won't play without going to the site, but not sure that's a IG thing?

@Beany the old site was on an unsupported Ubuntu build, so moved to the latest LTS with a fresh LAMP stack then updated PhpBB....we were already on 3.3 but just moved up a few minor revisions.

@Marv I think it's just because it's a "fresh" install....but yeah, it does seem a bit crisper.

Oh and @Beany is that the header images with McQueen? They load for me...maybe they're cached. I'll clear and test.

Ah nice. Also, lets face it, that's a pretty good justification to just Upgrade Fucking Everything because for the sake of half a day of downtime on a forum for a bunch of needlessly pendantic twats to keep the underlying OS good for the thick end of a decade, that's totally worth it.

And yeah, I know browsers are a bit shitty about caching images etc, but I've just done an upgrade with similar issues, so I checked with private sessions, different browsers etc, and yeah the header images etc want some attention - when you can be bothered to get into it

It absolultely feels a bit zippier - I'm familiar with the hosting company, and while I have strong opinions on them that rule them out for me at work, can't grumble about the underlying hardware specs. Just the upgrade at a basic hardware level (not even amount of RAM etc, just more modern CPUs) should handle the bot load better, etc.

And credit where credit is due for doing an upgrade on a Friday night for a server that costs you money rather than making you money, and where the userbase are a bunch of cunts nice one!
