I've got a Wilfa Svart. It does things excellently and is about £100ish.

Bought it based on a review article and comparison by Which.

Edit: a bit dearer now, but not horribly so.

I think I'd get bored pretty quickly with a manual grinder. And in the £250 grinders video he does say the Baratza's downside is that it's noisy and he wouldn't want it in his home for that reason. So I'd be tempted to spend £240 on the DF54, though apparently that's a bit messy :laugh: Get out the Timculator and check out his sub-£500 grinder video...

Save your cash and buy it pre-ground. If you're buying decent coffee in the first place it's going to be ground as it's packed for sending to you.

I know it's £160 for a grinder but based on Hoffman's test above, it's better when ground at home using that £160 grinder than it is a day after it's been opened if you buy pre-ground.

Not part of the vid, but apparently cheap cheap ones are blade grndrs vs burr grndrs.

I'll go out on a limb here but I'm 99.99% positive that in a blind taste test, not one single one of us could tell the difference between beans ground with a blade and those with burr

How about if you had the rear seat of your car folded down when you do the taste test?

When I have a sip of coffee I can tell you what the weather was at the time the bean was being harvested and the rough time of day. Beans harvested in the rain or evening are particularly bitter. I prefer my beans grinded in a solid gold burr grinder. The gold does not impart any flavour thus keeping the virginity of the ground coffee intact. Don't start me on the struggle of sourcing glacial water from Antarctica...

I'll have to watch it, but I don't believe it. And if I watch it and do believe it, I probably still won't believe that it's £160 better tasting

I'm in the middle of exactly the same thought process, but I think I'll probably land on the Baratza. I've been scouring the web to try and get a bargain DF54 but, not for the first time, I'm finding that coffee people tend to think that their equipment does not depreciate as they want practically the same money for the used stuff and are unwilling to negotiate (presumably they sell it, so they just be right I suppose!).

Yes yes, I know it's probably not gonna taste much different but £160 isn't the end of the world for a present for one's self.

£160 divided by how many cups of coffee, though Could be a bargain. And it’s only the same price as a month of Starbucks.

I’ve always been a tea drinker rather than coffee but I had some lovely espresso a couple of years ago and I’ve been wondering if I can be bothered to try brewing it that well at home. Can’t be arsed.
