In a surprise move, a good friend of mine who has shown little to no interest in cars over the years has just asked for advice about TTs. This is the one he’s highlighted but the general brief is “sports car” and “£4k”. He’s not wedded to either TTs or convertibles.

I know nothing about TTs but it’s just a posh Golf right ? On that basis it looks to me like it fits the bill. It would just be for pootling around, him & his wife, no children or pets etc.

100% go for a tt, that one is front wheel drive, so no special skills or awareness needed come wintertime. As you say it’s basically a golf/a3 underneath

I thought we were all about Z4Cs these days?
Mind you once you get down to a about £4-5k they do start getting a bit, er, ratty. Like, visible rust ratty

My dad is on his second.
The first a mk2 Tdi sport Quattro
Current a manual TTS.
He likes them, they do what he wants in a car. Look decent, reliable, the roof goes down.

I had the TTS but with DSG, absolutely great wee car. Possibly nothe last word in handling dynamics but it was really stupidly fast for a 4 banger golf in a frock.
Check for rust around the boot struts and decent service history but MK2s are pretty cheap. I would avoid the 1.8. seems to be not as good as a 2.0.

Thanks all.
What’s with the 1.8 ? Speed (& handling) are not really prime concerns here. Reliability far more important as he won’t be fixing it himself.
