Haven't done one of these for a while!

Car killer travelling veterinary (Mr Chinnery for cars) requires a tough (does about 30k a year) estate after her Mondeo just broke its cambelt and needs scrapping

Trying to keep her out of SUVs as efficiency is a high priority and she doesn't really need one. So far I've recommended a Mazda 6 Estate (found a couple of good ones on AT) and a Toyota Avensis (I can't find any of these!)

Found a Kia C'eed but I don't really know their reputation for reliability. Same goes for VWs and Skodas of that vintage, happy to be enlightened.

Any further ideas welcomed, thanks.

PS if it doesn't have heated seats, it's out

Rock solid, well specced cars.

Assuming a diesel from 2015 onwards gives some premium brand options, early Volvo V90s, last of the line V70s, the odd A6.

I like the Mazda6 too. They're mostly high spec and look alright.

Do not buy any recent 2.0 4 cylinder (petrol or diesel) engined Volvo, under any circumstances.

Same with 2.2d engined Mazda's, just don't.

Don't think a Yeti is a goer being that ugly

I was considering a Mazda 6 estate but when I started digging into the 2.2d engine it was immediately ruled out. Can’t remember the details, just a lot of horror stories. Defitnely one to avoid at this price point.

How much space does she need/want?
Auto or petrol?
Manuel or diesel?
Any ULEZ to contend with?
Apart from ring cookers, owt else she wants?

Completely predictably, personally I’d be looking for a 5-Series, but £10k only gets something ~10 years old and you’d have to forego a lot of the bells & whistles you get on newer cars.

Failing that, the Superb seems to have it stitched up.

I'm surprised the Superb isn't cheaper than the Passat, which it would have been a generation ago. Makes the Passat look even better value.

Broccers' C-class suggestion is a good one too, though a lot of them won't have heated seats again. And artico (fake leather) is pretty much the only upholstery you'll find, so she'd need to tolerate the feel of it.

I found a lovely one, but I think it would be a brave choice as everyone would just see it as an error from the outset if something expensive went wrong with it!

Nuttinew: The diesel vs petrol debate is still open AFAIK, but I think an auto diesel would still be cheaper to run. No particular toys required, no ULEZ issues. Space? Maximum

Additionally I think it's got to be from a dealer, if it shits itself she'll want someone to shout at.

I've also discounted the Mazda unfortunately, too many horror stories, including a colleague who had a replacement engine among other maladies.
