Your Restomod

Post by V8Granite »

I’m pretty sure we have done this before but what would be your lottery win restomod ?

I’d have a 6.5 litre Brabus 500e with a 5 speed gearbox and low ratio rear diff and 300kmh speedo. 450hp will do.
Big 350mm steel 4 pot brakes and an interior with leather and Alcantara and velvet on all the touchy feely spots.

A Defender with OM606 300hp 3.0 mechanical Mercedes diesel, a waterproof shell (maybe wishing a bit too far) and relatively standard underpinnings. Things like marine spec wiring, gauges, seals etc would be perfect and twin heaters.

For the holiday car then a BMW E38 with M5 Competition running gear. Dark blue over cream.

So many choices.....

90's Griff. Pretty much standard visually except for 18" TVR Spiders with some decent modern rubber.

Fun road car as opposed to a track tool of course, but with a 570bhp crate 7-litre LS7 with a (Tremec?) 6-speed manuel box.

Properly sorted brakes and chassis with ABS and traction control.

Minimal silencing.

E31 8 series in Techno Violet, bigger wheels and E39 M5 running gear.

Or that XJ220 mule with a transit body.

Or a 70s Rolls Royce with a Tesla swap.

The lack of lane departure safety systems is interesting 😂

Apart from Apple Car Play, there isn’t much developed in the last 20 years I feel a car needs ?

Humvee with whatever the recommended diesel engine swap is.

I’d like the engine from a Chieftain tank in something. Although I don’t think a Jay Leno’s tank car is the answer. Need to think of something suitable to chuck a 2.5 tonne engine in.

Original Fiat 500 with a Tesla Plaid drivetrain. I’d want the full 1000bhp for tootling round London.

Mobility scooter with the motor from a Nissan Leaf for when I get severely injured driving the Fiat 500.
How about not having a sig at all?

That’s a good point with the Chieftan, I’m a fan of the CV12 in the Challenger as we had one in for a while at work but the
Leyland in the Chieftan is particularly angry sounding.

Loads tbh

4th gen Chevy Monte Carlo NASCAR rep with 1000hp

130 wheelbase land rover with a Cummins and a tray bed

E30 340 touring, either an M60 which has problems or M3 V8 which is less appealing as I like the idea of building an in period V8 3 series.

A Merc W111 coupe. Slightly lowered, full electric drivetrain, modern comforts. Doesn't need to be a rocketship, just to glide around in quietly on the weekend.

Volvo P1800 with the drivetrain from the Noble M600 (because Volvo used that V8 too, if you squint at the spec sheet).

BMW E24 with an E31 V12 drivetrain.

Opel Manta with the VAG RS3 5 pot and 450 bhp. Manual with LSD obvs. Modern rear axle setup and suspension. Big brakes.

MST Mk2 with the RS2000 kit. Full fat millington with sequential.

TVR Cerbera. I fucking love a cerbera. Mildly tweaked with the broken design shit fixed and everything working.

Original mini with gr Yaris drivetrain, built and working in less time than a certain other Toyota engined 4wd mini…

I’d also like an Alfa Romeo Romeo camper, just to be different to all the vw campers

Dogs dicks, I forgot about them briefly.

I'll have a full 2.7 Millington Mk2 as well. 15" minilites. Just need to decide on Grp4 vs X-Pack arches.

I agree with everyone’s lottery win plans 😎

RS3 engine in something is a good point as that’s a strong engine that makes an amazing noise.

W111 would be one of the few that an electric drivetrain would enhance it.

Oh now, yes. I'm liking that thought. Much better than those wishing to ruin an E38 with M5 running gear - have a word chaps.

Long time idle thought has been a TA22 or TA28 Celica with a supercharged 1UZ - a bit like this but maybe a touch more refined:

I also think an SM would be on the cards, with either the 4.2 or 4.7 Maserati/Ferrari engine.

Slightly left field, but I'd quite like to do an E89 Z4. Rip out the folding hard top gubbins (along with a load more weight) and put in some hidden scaffolding and a proper hard top (because stiffness). I dunno, S85 V10 or something. I just think it was a cool looking car that never really got proper M-car treatment.

You could go the other way and convert the race car to road spec, go singer dls style and have interchangeable boot lids with or without wing for track use

Hmm I’m not sure to be honest.

There are literally thousands of cars I’d buy and modify if I had the time / space / money.

However I’m not entirely convinced by the Restomod thing as it’s termed these days. I think a lot of them go too far and engineer out the details and quirks that make me like the cars in the first place.

See things like the overly fussy led headlights a lot of them seem to get. I’ve no doubt they work far better than the old halogen candles, but a lot of the time I think they ruin the distinctive classic face of the car.

I’d like something based on a delta integrale but I wouldn’t want every interior surface, the boot and the bonnet lining finished in rolls Royce quality leather.

I know the idea is that you can tailor them to exactly what you want, but most of them I see I can’t help think a really nice original version looks far better. Very few I’ve seen I look at and like everything.

So mine would be a delta integrale. Stripped, shell strengthened, maybe a hidden internal roll cage, fully galvanised. Composite bumpers, bonnet and tailgate to save some weight (painted so they look standard) tarmac rally spec wheel and suspension setup. Interior plastics made a bit less creaky. Modern engine management and turbo setup for about 350bhp with running gear suitably beefed up to cope.

But externally I wouldn’t want it to look modernised or modified.
Cheers, Harry
