My everything is going down the drain. I’ve really noticed it this year. Eyesight, hearing, balance, coordination. I’m a wreck.

yeah, it’s barely noticeable on the van, whereas i’ve driven ford hatchbacks with it where it’s all i can see!

Same, but I think I'm a few years your junior.Sundayjumper wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 9:43 pmMy everything is going down the drain. I’ve really noticed it this year. Eyesight, hearing, balance, coordination. I’m a wreck.
I'm gonna call this a pro gamer move; I'm speedrunning this shit!
Re: Crap design in modern cars
Macan heated windscreen has no wires in the glass. I don’t know how it works but it does. I hated the one in my Volvo glinting slightly - much finer wires than old Ford ones but still visible enough to be annoying at certain times.
The thing I do find annoying is having to raise my spectacles to see the detail of traffic on the nav screen - ‘16 mins delay’ isn’t legible with them on and I’m not quite ready to go for varifocals

I thought it was due to having an Astigmatism, so the eyes focus at slightly different rates or something.Sundayjumper wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 9:41 pm The Aston has it, I find it mildly distracting.
The RR had it, I found it moderately distracting.
The Disco has it, I find it minimally distracting.
So…. dunno ? Something to do with exactly how close it is to your face ?
I don’t notice them at all if the glass is perfectly clean, if it isn’t then they stand out and find I focus on them without thinking about it.
Dave!

Ah maybe that’s it, I do have astigmatism.
I’m perfectly happy driving in the rain during the day with no windscreen wipers on but the lines drive me insane

Re: Crap design in modern cars
Every car I've driven that has had them I've found it incredibly distracting. I think it perhaps just one of those things where once you've seen something you can;t stop yourself from focussing on it. However, I'm astigmatic in one eye as well...
Re: Crap design in modern cars
my reason for hating heated screens. Never saw the need. Demist works just fine.
I have a GLB at the moment and from engine on to demisted inside and out with this button is about 30 seconds to a minute if it's particularly cold
Re: Crap design in modern cars
As per SundayJumper - Disco 3/4 screen wires didn’t bother me in the slightest. Clearing the screen was hugely faster than relying on warm air alone.

Proof that newer isn’t more better
Re: Crap design in modern cars
My cars auto sign recognition got the speed limit a little wrong, only out by a tiny 100mph

Re: Crap design in modern cars
The ability (or lack of thereof) of modern cars to consistently read local speed limits is going to be an issue if that proposal about ECU enforced speed limits ever comes about

Re: Crap design in modern cars
Also speed limit signs in the UK are probably the most simple in Europe. In Portugal the speed limit may be 50 but speed bumps are 30. The car couldn’t figure it out.
Motorway slip roads - the speed is like 90 or 80 depending on how sharp the bend it but it’s alongside the motorway. You just have the car slam the brakes from 120 to 80 because it can’t figure it out.
Also read 30 as 80 in many cases even though the signs weren’t vandalised.

Re: Crap design in modern cars
I remember it on many Focuses (Foci?). It's one of those things that if I didn't look for it, I didn't notice it. But as soon as I focused (no pun intended) on the heating elements, its all I could see.
Cheers,
Mike.

How much of the tech is based on GPS positioning and how much on signage ??Mito Man wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 1:03 pm Also speed limit signs in the UK are probably the most simple in Europe. In Portugal the speed limit may be 50 but speed bumps are 30. The car couldn’t figure it out.

Re: Crap design in modern cars
It was reading the signs most of the time, another thing is in Portugal they have recommended speed limits. So you have a regular 100kmh sign in black with a red border and then afterwards a blue 80kmh sign which is a recommended speed. The car will pick up the 80 as the max speed limit.dinny_g wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 3:15 pmHow much of the tech is based on GPS positioning and how much on signage ??Mito Man wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 1:03 pm Also speed limit signs in the UK are probably the most simple in Europe. Driving into the sun the camera on the car gets blinded and you get a yellow warning on the speedo. Then it reverts to gps speeds.

Re: Crap design in modern cars
Sort of a loaded question really as from my experience, it's a lot more GPS than Sign-post based.
In Milton Keynes, outside of the centre (30 and 40mph limits), the rest of the city is 60 or 70 but there are very few speed limit signs. But my car always seems to know the limit.
But there are a few notable exceptions. As I leave Newport Pagnell and head into the MK roundabout system, the limit changes from 30 to 60 but my car still thinks it's 30 for about 400m after the roundabout. It definitely isn't. There are no sign posts at all on that section, either NSL or 30 etc.

Re: Crap design in modern cars
My experience of it, when I forget to switch it off before pulling away, has been it relies heavily on one camera. It reacts late to sign changes, often just misses a posted change and stays at the previous limit, and with the frost of late and the camera being obscured I'm presented with endless "bongs" and distracting warning messages on the dash screen as every system (that relies on said camera) noisily reports its failure. I count about four/five warnings every time the camera fails. Made worse when the wipers might clear the camera again, so all systems chime back in, only to fail again if the screen condensates enough.
Short version, its a fking awful system and its dangerously distracting when they shut down. I won't be buying/leasing another car if these systems continue like this (unless I can force them off with some 3rd party hacks at least).
