New toy

Post by Nefarious »

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, my firearms licence has finally been granted so I'm allowed to go and collect this next week.

It's the actual rifle that took bronze in the 50m prone at the last commonweath games and gold in the previous junior olympics. It is a lovely, lovely piece of engineering and will be considerably better than I am.

Very cool. What does it shoot? .22?

Yup. Like the racecar, it does one job. But does it rather well. It puts little holes in bits of paper a *long* way away.

What is it? (Other than “rifle”)

I’m trying to figure how your (or anyone else’s) hand sits on the grip to pull the trigger. Shape is confusing me…. :?

Ooh what ranges do you have near you ?

I will formally send you a shiny 2p piece on a length of paracord if you join the club.

I think we can drop to 50m with it being a .22.

It's an Anschultz 1913 with lots of fancy bolt on bits.

The grip is a bit deceptive in the photo because it's shaped on the other side.
I was very lucky that the previous owner happens to be very similarly sized and shaped to me, so it fits like a latex glove.

My club is Prestonpans, so I usually shoot at the cadet range down there for the indoor 25m stuff. Bisley has a super-tech pipe range too so I've been there for a couple of goes. Dalkeith is where I will go for the outdoor 50m stuff, but I haven't been yet.

Bisley used to have a SAT range aswel, so pneumatically operated SA80s that would inevitably all be unloaded onto a T72 tank as we were trigger happy children playing army 😂

I was there in either 96 - 97 or 97 - 98.

Was the wailing and gnashing from you or the licensing authority?

Looks like you have an Elon Musk robot hand at the bottom left. Hope it doesn't gain sentience.

Oh a few bits cocked up. I needed to do a subject access request with the local police in everywhere I've ever lived. Lots of them didn't reply, or passed me on to someone else, or amusingly, asked me for the exact information I was asking them for.
Then my GP made a mistake on my medical (meaning it all had to be done again from scratch).
Then I made it more complicated by adding shotgun and explosives licence applications in part way (it's very cheap if you do it at the same time, but very expensive if you do it separately).

The evil robot hand is the adjustable stock. All those fingers things fold out to fit my shoulder

Yeah, that's kinda already happened. I only got into this by accident - when we were in Thailand in February, my mate took me to one of those tourist ranges, and I discovered I was actually ok at shooting. When I got back to the UK, I went to the Prestonpans club for a try and they put me straight on the team!

Now, 9 months later, I've turned part of my loft into an armoury, I'm shopping for 3 different weapons, and learning to build my own ammo

When I got back to the UK, I went to the Prestonpans club for a try, and the bloke that runs the thing comes over and said "Oi no professionals". I put my rifle down, and said "I'm not a professional". He said "you're not a professional?" I said "No". He said - well you should be. They put me straight on the team!

Very nice.

On my list once I'm in a better headspace is to get back into target shooting - not done it since I was about twelve and I wasn't bad at it - but it's always time and money.

I've got the money now, just working on the time.

When we were finishing we went up to target shotting on the 300 metre ranges but had some fun shoots at 600. We had our own dedicated rifles by then as we had spent ages zeroing them in and getting them as we like.

What used to annoy me was having to get 20 rounds down range to get my eye in and Ed our senior guy being bang on with the first shot.

That's part of the reasoning behind getting my own. I'm fed up of using the club guns and having to spend 10 minutes and ha;f a dozen rounds to set them up before I'm ready to shoot.
Plus, I've got an astigmatism in my shooting eye, so need a lens. It's a lot better to have it attached to the rifle than attached to my face.
