Ah that’s sad. World’s strongest Man was a staple in our place as kids.
RIP

I met him as a kid
He was very quiet, gentle, and kind
It was a charity thing at a local fete
Think I've still got the autographed program somewhere

I have a vague memory of a tv programme where he kept budgies, which seemed really incongruent for such a massive guy

Synonymous with UK Strongmen and someone I watched with my parents and a tradition that has continued with my kids comes Xmas

Met him a few times over the years through some cadet stuff and initially in Peterborough town at a Net Curtain shop with my Mum
RIP big man.

You just triggered a strong memory of us doing the same - particularly when Jon Pall Sigmarsson appeared - brash, gobby and a massive show-off vs Capes who was comparatively quiet & reserved and let the results speak for him. Comparatively ripped - JPS always
looked like he was going to be the stronger, but we always rooted for Capes.
Also brought back memories of Capes complaining his arms were too long for some events? (In general - not in relation to JPS).

You looked just like Emlyn Hughes in your youth there, Mik.
I always assumed he was Bruce Robinson's inspiration for Jeff Woad in Withnail & I. Capes was part of the furniture of my childhood; always on TV doing something strong. RIP to the big fella.

He was just a household name growing up, synonymous with strength. The kind of thing where if someone was trying to lift something heavy you'd hear something like "Who do you think you are? Geoff Capes?'.
Absolute legend, I really feel like he's been around at a county fair and the like when I was a kid, but my memory is very hazy (weirdly I do remember the crowd going wild at one of those things because an actor from Bread was there).
Anyway, RIP, a legend and seemed to be a nice guy too.

What a shame, was a total legend for us 80s kids and seemed like a thoroughly top bloke too. RIP.
Simpler times when it came to the work of celebrity back then.

I remember Manfred Hoerbel needing oxygen after most events. A very obvious PED abuser though sadly.
Currently Žydrūnas Savickas is the absolute greatest of all time, closely followed by Mariusz Pudzianowski and then Brian Shaw. Brian Shaw is an absolute monster and I’d love to see him compete.
Strongman currently is awesome, much more professional and the weights are getting silly. Tom and Luke Stoltman up
In Invergordon are doing special things, a 285kg Atlas Stone is ridiculous. We had an 80 kg stone, it feels like your stomach is going to come out your throat
Dave!

Mitch Hooper is another one, just a total freak
