The Touring version which CH is much more interested in, seems pretty desirable.

I’m going to drive the demo Cayenne GTS a week on Tuesday. Will see if I can get on the list for a GT3 Touring with rear seats and PDK. I’m not sure it actually appeals to me more than a 992.1 Carrera S but if I can order one I probably ought to…

You should but despite how good PDK is you should order a manual.
Interestingly I do now have a purchase history with Porsche main dealer in the last 18 months but I expect only new cars really count from a profit margin perspective.
It’s all a bit bloody Rolex isn’t it.
ETA - watching the video as I type… heated buckets too!
ETA 2 - £157k starting for the touring… so I expect £180k with options… Would I enjoy it 2.5x my GTS… I expect probably not. Sad thing is life and ambition propels you forward and as good as these are, near £200k would mean I choose something with a v12 and a prancing horse on the front.

Why on earth would I order the version I don’t want? PDK is great and my MX5 is my entirely manual toy. It wouldn’t be to sell on; it would be for me because a GTS is now £150k or so without that many options. £157k for a GT3 Touring seems a viable alternative. Bet the depreciation is lower; may even be cheaper on a PCP.
ETA: just had a flick through the configurator for the GTS and I’ve specced one very barely but perfectly livable for £136k. So there’s a £21k jump to the GT3 before adding metallic paint, even. Maybe it’s not quite as close in price as I’d remembered.

A Manuel touring might just be the perfect family car. How much are kidneys going for nowadays?

I’ve now watched Harris’s video and much of Mat Watson’s. I really would like a GT3 Touring with the buckets. Black paint with the chrome window surrounds and silver alloys.
But for my use I know I’d find the buckets more irritating getting in and out, the Carrera S turbo engine with 450bhp is plenty for me and probably works better for everyday use and it’d be a lot cheaper. But fuck me, the Touring 992.2 is absolutely up there in the want one stakes. A half price S/T, probably.

This was my point re PDK versus manual.
It sounds to me that you are thinking of this as a daily-able car. The likelihood of you doing that in a GT3 is much lower than a Carrera S or GTS given the harder suspension (and noise from it being rose jointed), revvier torque light motor, etc. If it then becomes more of a special occasions car then manual makes more sense for the interaction and theater.
If you want something to use regularly and to drive to work in along the motorway then the GT3 is likely not the correct choice anyway and you'd be better sticking with the original plan of a PDK GTS or Carrera S. It sounds like you're thinking that a PDK GT3 Touring bridges the gap but I'm not sure it will. Anyway, rear seats are really only for kids 10 and under so they wouldn't serve much of a practical use either so then other than it being "Porschephile catnip" (which really applies most to manual versions) why get a touring with rear seats at all over a GT3 with PDK?
Obviously horses for courses and clearly you'll make your own decision but I'm just applying (my own admittedly) logic to it. Many people buy cars based on the idea of it and the practical reality is something altogether different. I've driven tens of thousands of miles in a manual 911 and now have a PDK version so I am talking from experience vis a vis what you lose. It is great if you live in the middle of a city like me but you don't!
But anyway - when you get one please can I have a p-ride!

I have three other cars, two of them manual - it’s not like I’d be sitting on the motorway in it just commuting, whether I get a C2S or a GT3 Touring. I just like the PDK boxes better - manual being a necessity for fun is such a boring trope and people seem very happy with auto-blip doing the throttle for them as they change gear now
However, keep on with the ‘must go manual’ thing - if I get a PDK and it’s actually rarer that bodes better for residuals.

Well, why didn't you get auto versions of those two then?

Because the auto Jimny is rare and expensive while the auto MX5 barely exists in the U.K.

I can accept “some”, but not “all”
I can also accept that PDK is ruthlessly efficient on-track.

That Touring looks lovely! I'm clearly getting old because I think the folded, heated carbon buckets were one of the highlights for me.
So are GT3s one of those cars that you basically have to be invited to buy? I wasn't sure what Porsche models that applies to these days. I'm also assuming the "purchase history" to get on that list only applies to new stuff.

If you compare the prices to a manual Jimny, they're about £2k more. Which on a sub-£5k car is quite a lot.
On the mk4 MX5, you couldn't spec an auto with the soft top, just the RF, as far as I'm aware. It's certainly not available now. Of the used MX5s on Mazda's website, 8 are auto and 172 are manual. On Auto Trader, 25 autos and 842 manuals (and none of them are mk4s).

If the mk4 wasn't available as a soft top with auto then fair enough, that makes things a tad difficult
I wouldn't say you should have got the body type you didn't want just so you could get an auto either.

I think you’re being very selective with your Jimny choices there. The autos are either rusty sheds or £7k upwards. And the market when I bought mine (early COVID era so over 4 years ago) was different.
