I chose not to call this thread "Mike Lynch" as he's technically just missing. I'm more interested as to whether it is the mother of all coincidences that his co-defendent was killed in a hit and run on Saturday!?

He's my second cousin. Didn't realise he was on the boat until I saw the news this morning. I don't think I've seen him since 1979 but I really didn't ever expect to see a news item about a superyacht sinking with a family member on board.

I thought yesterday (so not connected to a family member being lost) that I didn't understand how a very large yacht suitable for crossing the Atlantic could sink at anchor in the Mediterranean. I am sure a full report will be published, and Mike Lynch's co-defendant being killed a couple of days before in a car accident does look entirely coincidental, but I would really like to know the sequence of events which led to the sinking.

The local CCTV does make it look shockingly violent wind.

I guess all the holes lined up in the cheese with this one; night time, so everyone in their cabins and dark, at anchor, so hatches not battened down, potentially being at anchor fore and aft meant the ship couldn’t turn into wind..

My friends who’ve done the helicopter immersion drill say it’s very easy to become disoriented, and they’re in a rig waiting for it to happen.. god help someone in a messy, dark environment who has just been asleep.

The helicopter immersion is incredibly easy, you even have re-breathers on for some environments. I’d imagine the nature of even a simple calm helicopter landing would be 100 times more intense. The idea of navigating a yacht in those circumstances doesn’t bare thinking about.

Also, even if all the hatches were open, it would take a massive amount of stupidity to not put it in a suitable condition once the weather picks up, there is always someone on duty.

I was told n a ship that started sinking in Astican dry dock due to basic checks on sea valves not being done.

My colleague was on a pilot boat that sunk and after speaking to him that was quite the exciting event where his mobile still working saved lives. He had no life jacket on either due to some big failings of the shipyard, winter aswell.

I hear the conspiracy theories but I do not understand what anyone has to gain from offing Mike Lynch and his co-defendant.

And while superyauchts do not frequently sink, people on bikes get hit by cars in Cambridgeshire villages all the time.

Very wealthy people are always into shit we don't know about, so why would you understand what anyone has to gain?

I'm sure it is a coincidence, there are certainly a lot easier ways to bump someone off. However, it seems like a remarkable coincidence to me.

I saw that the Bayesian is owned by a company called Revtom - which has only one shareholder - Mr Lynch's wife. Which made me think of your comment above. That could of course be to enable it to be easily chartered out to other wealthies, but I think there may be a purely coincidental knock-on effect that the ownership of the company could be passed to her kids.... which might coincidentally mean it's not subject to inheritance tax (?) [I am not a tax expert, so this may not be correct].

I'm sure that'll be for tax reasons one way or another, probably most large yachts like that are owned in such a way.

My mother and sister knew him better than me. They went out and stayed with him at his place in the south of France a few years ago. For me it feels a bit odd and unnerving but no more than that - I wasn’t sufficiently close or connected to them. Makes me think I should have clicked the suggested Facebook friend request I’ve been getting for the last 15 years.

They had already got a judgment on causation against him - but the judge's summary in the causation hearing has the following note:
"Quantum will be determined in a later judgment, but I would anticipate that, although substantial, it will be considerably less than claimed."

So I don't expect them to get £3bn.
