Missed the thread so here's mine.
M5 total disaster. The convoy up the hill of all M5s pointed out they've lost the the M plot.

MGs tho. Are they actually attractive?

YouTube coverage with Harry M talking today was superb.

What you looking forward to seeing?

Anyone actually going this year?

I keep meaning to go, just to at least tick that box, but either the dates don't work or I've not got anything interesting to go in.

Some of the reports from this year reckon it's getting massively oversubscribed and it's just too busy now. Not sure how true that is, but plenty on Twitter moaning about this year and last compared to the 'good old days'

It always looks pretty interesting - and I can see the appeal of the Revival too - the trek from Glasgow always feels less appealing than the event(s) though. :?

I'll be there on Sunday.

Haven't been since 2011, apparently it has become much, much bigger event since then.

With regards to what I'm looking forward to seeing...well everything really

Aye, at times like that it just feels like a long commute :(
I don't know if a flight to Southampton would be reasonably doable (Gatwick more obvious but a bit further out, Goodwood wouldn't need a hire car, BIYCDTYHDIA).

I went today, feels like attendance has been the same for about the last 10 years. And since Covid you don’t get any freebies from anyone at all. I remember back in the old days having both hands full of bags - free caps, magazines, radio, key rings, notepads, brochures, flags. And Thursdays were free!
The food situation this year was total shit. I don’t know if there’s fewer vendors but the queues for everything were ridiculous after 11am - thankfully I was well equipped with one pocket full of babybels, the other full of kitkat, and a bottle of water.

I think Goodwood is now the only major European car show left? Kind of feels like it as there’s loads of international launches for cars we will never get in the UK. Can also see why the EU wants tariffs imposed on Chinese cars. I think most of the mainstream brands were Chinese which shows the way things are going.
Most of their cars are just shameless copies and mashups of European cars with terrible interior plastics.

Also finally got to see a Cybertruck, not as awful as I thought, the front end is very curved and doesn’t seem bigger than any other 1/2 tonne pickup. Did have sharp edges but I don’t think it’s any worse than say the Ineos pickup which had a metal bumper with sharp edges and exposed screws. Or the Nomad which was the same. Or the Morgan 3 wheeler which is again the same. I guess the real risk is that the Cybertruck is far more mass produced though. Just put a normal 0.6mm thick steel bonnet with pedestrian airbags and it’ll be fine…

There’s a cool vid on the goodwood YouTube channel with the fastest shootout run from each year since it started (1993 I think) when there were about three straw bales along the track and marshals just standing on the grass.

I first went in 1999 when me and a mate just rolled up on the Saturday, bought tickets on the gate and as we walked towards the spectator area someone leaving asked if we would like their grandstand seats. We sat a couple of rows behind Tiff Needell, pretty much bang opposite the house.

I think that was about the time it really started to take off and get more professional and more popular. More of a big event rather than the hill climb with a couple of vendors in the infield section.

I think 2002 was probably the last one I went to!

Watching the long shot of the cars going up towards the flint wall the crowds and numbers of grandstands look to have grown massively. I’m not sure I’d enjoy it that much tbh, or you’d need to go for more than one day to be able to see everything / take it all in.

Im sure there’s nowhere else where you can see such a huge variety of running / driving cars from every era so I get why so many people go.

Haven't been to FOS since at a guess 2009-ish. Seemed super busy then, and people saying it wasn't like it used to be! :D

Went to the Revival 4 or 5 years ago, that was great.

I wish there was a Revival/MM type event for 70's to 90's cars, they're pretty ancient now and deserve their own spot.

For anyone that hasn’t been or hasn’t been for a while I’d recommend the Revival over FoS. It eliminates the chav element and to be honest, with the slow elimination of ICE cars and the neutering of what’s left with petrol particulate filters, the AC Cobras, E types and 904s of the revival are an intravenous injection of all of what makes cars great.

And there must be several hundred of our continental cousins from Holland and Germany who make the trip so Glasgow is manageable!

I’d be up for an OV9 trip next year if people are up for it or alternatively getting a few +1 tickets for the members meeting which was a broader church of CanAm plus gerhard bergers Ferrari F1 car this year.

The revival is a totally different thing though (I've done both).

I used to go on a Thursday every year for a meet up with old mates and have a few beers but as highlighted, it used to be free/ reasonably priced. Neither are true so we've binned it off.

Depending on what is the theme then I found the racing at the revival far more impressive and fun.

Giant Holdens racing with Imps, Silver Arrow pre war race cars at full chat. Plus you have all the vintage aircraft and the motorbikes slithering around etc.

As a 1 day event the FOS is probably a bigger assault on the senses but more than 1 day and the revival is a huge improvement.

Dave!

I remember when 1 day wasn’t enough to do the FOS, thinking maybe it was just rose tinted specs so I had a look at the old 2019 maps (personally feels like it never fully recovered post Covid for me).

So yeah, half the amount of manufacturers and exhibitors now, maybe less!

But everything gets worse. The MM is now like how the Revival was 10 years ago and that’s the one to go to now.

That's an excellent idea. Worth it for some 90s touring car action alone. Although, presumably higher speeds, more safely challenges.

Yeah, I enjoyed the Revival, but I'm not particularly interested in cars from the 40-50s. The racing was close and interesting for a bit, but it's mainly about dressing up rather than cars imo.

The paddock area of the main show was far more my style - racing cars and supercars from all eras all mixed together.

Silverstone festival (or classic as it used to be called) has all that sort of thing. We went last year, was an interesting mix of cars on track

Interesting twitter post - close to £100k for a 2-car stand

I know a bloke who provides food vans for big events such as this and festivals etc. They sign up to exclusive coverage agreement in return for hefty daily fees for each van - but they aren’t then competing against anyone else so all the food prices are £ouch.

I wonder how much space for a stand at the NEC used to cost? The food prices at the NEC were also extortionate but the food outlets were run by the venue and the food was rubbish, so maybe we should be grateful for burger vans.

Goodwood is always at risk of being a washout too. Back in the 1990s they could have probably held it in the village hall if wet.

I thought the food was reasonably priced, it was cheaper than Brands Hatch and I overheard someone say it’s 1/3 the price of Silverstone.

£50k per car is steep but still surprised that the bigger manufacturers weren’t there. Surely that’s nothing for Audi, VW, Mercedes. Also I’m guessing that having your car in a paddock must be significantly cheaper as that seems to be where everyone is now. I have other ideas why Lister didn’t bring a car and it’s not the cost of it!
