Bye bye Starmer
Re: Bye bye Starmer
Most of the stuff was for before he was PM. Then there's the potential conflict of interest over him willingly accepting tickets to football games whilst the Premier League lobby against a football regulator.
Frankly it's no wonder he had no good counter arguments, he was too busy watching matches, concerts and getting free dinners to think of anything

How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Bye bye Starmer
I’d prefer “politicians doing normal stuff like going to a football match for free on some corporate expense budget” over “politicians setting up their mates with new companies to con tax payers out of millions for faulty PPE”….Mito Man wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 7:21 pm Most of the stuff was for before he was PM. How about £404000 plus another £100k in giftsRich B wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 5:35 pm meh, i bet life in the public eye is probably not cheap. £170k really isn’t that much these days, and stuff like clothes for all the occasions you’re expected to attend won’t be cheap. the papers would have a field day if Mrs Starmer wore a primark dress to a event with world leaders or even the same dress 3 times.

Great, so now you’re criticising him for things he hasn’t done, based on the standards of the corrupt previous government (that you didn’t ever feel the need to criticise on here).Mito Man wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 7:31 pmHave patience, in time every one gets corrupt.Rich B wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 7:27 pmI’d prefer “politicians doing normal stuff like going to a football match for free on some corporate expense budget” over “politicians setting up their mates with new companies to con tax payers out of millions for faulty PPE”….Mito Man wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 7:21 pm Most of the stuff was for before he was PM. You sound like a silly little spoilt boy.

I frequently criticised the last lot of cunts in power too... I'm not going to white knight any of them unlike you though.Rich B wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 7:53 pmGreat, so now you’re criticising him for things he hasn’t done, based on the standards of the corrupt previous government (that you didn’t ever feel the need to criticise on here).

Rich B seems to like Starmer
Re: Bye bye Starmer
No ones declaring him to be a white knight, but i’m also not going to listen to dumb Tory trash talk about “being patient because one day he’ll be corrupt” - it’s like reading the daily mail.Mito Man wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 8:10 pmI frequently criticised the last lot of cunts in power too... Boris never did a deal with hummus and reversed breakfast.
Re: Bye bye Starmer
Yeah, the sausages thing was pretty hilarious.
Re: Bye bye Starmer
Lou Haigh was stood at the side of me at a bar last night and had a quick chat about her day at conference - I wasnt sufficiently drunk to ask her if she was ordering sausages for dinner. I did say tho her hair blended in really well with the stage back drop and looked at tho she didnt have any
Re: Bye bye Starmer
All well and good for those people but the ones with nothing in rented places are going to suffer. Our Lou was pulled up on this last night by one of my mates - she couldnt care any less.
Re: Bye bye Starmer
There is a certain amount of dishonesty and hypocracy from MPs over the whole business of accepting corporate gifts. It seems they are both happy to ride the gravy train themselves, *and* pearl-clutch over individual gifts accepted by rivals to gain political mileage.
Why are gifts allowed at all? I'm not allowed to send policemen or judges "gifts" if I'm up in court, I'm not allowed to send procurement officers "gifts" if I'm bidding for a work contract. I don't see gifts given to MPs in the hope for either influence or the opportunity for special attention as any different.
But that's just my personal opinion. File next to donations to political parties.
What I object to in this case is the inconsistency. Either we have a system where we deem it OK for the palms of democracy to be greased a *little* bit and we're all open about it, or we have a system where we deem it "not on", and then politicians can rightly be hauled over the coals for accepting holidays, suits, concert tickets etc.
When Zarah Sultana first became an MP in 2020, she gave this speech in response to her shock at suddenly being bombarded with freebees
The pretty much universal response from other MPs? Shut the fuck up, love, don't spoil the party for the rest of us.
ETA - I'm specifically talking about the accepted level of minor "goodwill" presents here, rather than the industrial-scale outright fraud the previous government honed down to an art.

Re: Bye bye Starmer
Due to the fact the Tories were in power for so long, we've sort of forgotten that certain behaviours are just to be expected. Doesn't make them right but it's an element of being in power that applies to all - Tory or Labour. Fact is they've all got their snouts in the trough, not matter what their persuasion so let's just apply some common sense to the situation.
For example, Starmer sitting in corporate seats at Arsenal is just common sense. He's a season ticket holder but can't accommodate his security detail in his usual seat. and Arsenal aren't charging him, or the taxpayer for the seats. This is absolutely fine IMO
Spending tax payer money on tickets to events for MP's is not Fine etc.

Re: Bye bye Starmer
When I was dealing with company reps I wasn’t allowed to take gifts from anyone touting for business.
Was always being offered golf trips and football tickets, neither of which I could give a fuck about
The boxes of booze at christmas usually got split up amongst the office.

Re: Bye bye Starmer
I have to register all gifts over £40 with HR - not that anyone gives me anything anymore...
Re: Bye bye Starmer
I had to declare gifts from vendors over £50. Then my employer reduced that to £5, which was a bit daft, now it’s back up to £50. Nobody ever declared anything though. It was normally a night of beer and curry and nobody had the mental capacity to tot it all up.
I did get offered a box at Wembley for an FA Cup playoff but word got out about it and I didn’t get chance to accept let alone declare it.
