Well, Dell fucked up.

49 million customers name, address and system specs/serial numbers were stolen, which doesn't sound too bad - no payment data etc - till you think that if someone sent a letter to your gran saying that there's a system update to their Dell Optiplex 1620 in black, S/N DE5G5KLGA with the added webcam, and the update needs to be run from the included USB drive, etc.

So might be worth taking note.

My current fun with this is working out whether as a company who supplied staff with Dells, where we stand with GDPR etc....fuckin' headache.

Other than the obvious potential for spam, what use are a bunch of names and addresses to scammers these days?

Mix it in with details from other large breaches, you could potentially have the grounds of a highly effective spear phishing campaign.

Dell did email me straight away. I’m not overly concerned because the data that was available is limited and I’m not an idiot. Bit poor though.

Yeah, it's 'in the phone book' sort of data, but as you note, it's something that reasonably should have happened, period.
