And then there was none..

For the first time since I was 17, I find myself without a single car to my name.. it’s a strange feeling tbh.

This unusual position has come about due the combination of a possible move abroad, a current lack of off road parking and a desire to purchase an additional property..

I hire cars or Uber to get around and will probably have to get something eventually, but currently.. 🤷‍♂️

I may look at joining a car club for fun, has anyone ever tried them? Was it David Yu that did? Not sure if they’re really my thing but maybe as a short term fix?..

Anyone heard from him at all ? As he was a Cancer survivor, I do wonder if he's still with us... :(

David’s done Auto Vivendi a few times, which is owned by Craig (ex-VMax organiser).

I think you're better off just buying a slightly used supercar and driving it a thousand miles before selling again

Effectively a grand a day with an averaged out limit of 50 miles per day.

You'd have to be a stupendous moron.

It gets better if you read the small print.
One off charge of £3k plus VAT.
Also the nicer cars have a little pesky asterisk:

"* 1.25 miles charged per mile, minimum 50 miles per day.
** 1.5 miles charged per mile, minimum 50 miles per day.
*** 2 miles charged per mile, minimum 50 miles per day.
**** 2.5 miles charged per mile, minimum 50 miles per day.

Sounds like a Viz advert foot note

Note: price does not include actual price

The thing with these schemes is that if you're wealthy enough to buy in you're wealthy enough to buy or rent the car so in effect they're pointless.

I imagine at least part of the appeal is that you don't have to even consider maintenance, MOT, insurance, etc or any annoying part of the ownership experience like going to the car and finding it has a flat battery because someone unplugged the battery tender by accident. Or things like it being left sitting for so long that mice get in to your georgian farmhouses barn where you store the car, and eat the wiring...

You just book the car, it's delivered to your door with a full tank, and you drive it. You fill it up as you need, maybe - maybe - top off the screenwash if you need to - then when you come back, you hand the keys back to the delivery driver. Saves a lot of hassle in terms of security, risk of theft, too.

Colleague/mate hired a T350 for his 25th. It was very good value, but the mandatory insurance excess of £3.5k (circa 20yrs ago) proved a great deterrent to push it too hard.

blimey, I was about to post the same thing. My best mate hired a T350 for his 27th and came round to mine (and informed me I was on the insurance too). It was a great laugh for the day, but not the same as a proper ownership experience. I got a call from him the next day to check my photos for front end lower damage because he came across a new speed bump on a road that used to be NSL when he last lived there...

I’ve not got anything either, I haven’t needed a car for ages and parking at my place is a nightmare.

May change when I get a new job but the current front runner is in cycling distance.

You can use my car anytime you want, as long as I can have a go of your aeroplane anytime I want……
