Question for Nurburgring experts

Post by mik »

Image

When they run races using the full track - combining the new Nurburgring GP circuit & old Nordschleife - why do they bypass the Mercedes Arena and take the short cut between points 1 and 5 above?

Combined circuit is obviously massive - with more than enough corners - so including or bypassing this is almost immaterial - it's just confusing me. What is the rationale for cutting this specific section out? It doesn't affect the connection points between the old and new circuits....so :?

Could it be something to do with max length or lap time of a race?

Always seemed like a silly Micky mouse bit added on to increase the lap length of the standalone circuit anyway. Hadn’t even noticed they didn’t use it when running the full setup.
