If you don't follow running, he was the current marathon world record holder, taking 34 seconds off the previous world record in only his third marathon at the age of 24. He was the first person to run sub 2:01 in competition and had become a legendary runner at the start of his career, possibly on course to do the first sub 2 hour race, so this is terribly tragic
