First Cars - Insurance

The boy is 17 in a few months so is starting to look at cars. It will have to be a washing machine due to insurance costs but other than looking at insurance groups I cant get a quote unless i put a made up DOB in the insurance sites. They won't quote on a driver until they are 17. Which also means I wont be able to insure anything we buy for him until his birthday.

Id like to be able to run something through a quote machine to make sure anything we buy is actually insurable. Which i suppose i could do with made up details. This seems a bit stupids though.

Advice?

Budget will be about £3k for the car i expect.

As you mention you'll have to put a fictitious kid in for a quote. I've had to do it twice recently and as a learner he can have a learner policy with you named on there and they are typically cheap (<£500) for most cars but they have to be cancelled when he passes and then the pain starts.

I would be looking at something group 5 or less if he intends to keep it and insure it after he passes his test. Fiestas seem popular but relatively expensive given the group which i assume is a consequence of lots of youngsters having them.

Cheap and sporty Skoda and Seat work out well. The Citigo Monte Carlo and Mii FR are group 1, the Mii is also 75bhp rather than 60.

My son has an Ibiza FR which is group 4 for the 80hp MPI but would jump to group 11 for the 95hp TSI!

That was in her name but I assume it will be less as a named driver if I buy the car which is what she is pushing for lol

Surprisingly cheap for what is a pretty nice car.

Most expensive to insure were Audi A1, Polos, Fiestas & Corsas. Most of them were in pretty bad condition at £3k too.

Currently learner, price doesn’t change once he’s passed. It was £120 a year to add him as a second driver to my van.
