Incorrectly used phrases
Incorrectly used phrases
(Where has the mis-quoted saying thread gone?)
Just heard on R4 chat show thingy:
“I really resonate with what you are saying”
Do you? Are you Mrs A.Bell?
I think you will find that what she is saying really resonates with you.
<sigh>

I'll have an expresso to go with that. Pacifically a strong one.
Edit: forgot my current pet hate "would of". No. Just no.

I could care less about this thread.
Re: Incorrectly used phrases
Maybe everyone will learn something new in this thread, ya know, 2 stones 1 bird.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Incorrectly used phrases
Chris Harris keeps saying 'chomping at the bit' in the Collecting Cars podcast. It's 'champing'.
Lewis Goodall keeps getting well known idioms or metaphors slightly wrong on the News Agents too, but they still make sense so I'm annoyed at myself for being annoyed at him. Language does evolve, after all.

Re: Incorrectly used phrases
You have just reminded me that someone stated in a meeting the other day that they were on tenderhooks waiting for the outcome.
This kinda thing happens so often that it’s really just become power for the course.

Admit instead of omit.
Re: Incorrectly used phrases
A LOT in the US. Films and TV too. If they just thought about what they were actually saying they'd realise how stupid it is.

Correct. I even sit with a badger most nights.
Re: Incorrectly used phrases
This was excellent
To be honest the most annoying thing about Americans is not what they say but how they say it - by which I mean vocal frrryyyyyyyy.
Re: Incorrectly used phrases
I’m terrible for getting sayings wrong
My pet hate is the local prolific pluralisation of the word you to “yous”

I could of posted my pet hate here too...
Another is people using a pluralisation for something singular
"The team are working on...." rather than than "The team is working on...."
And one I hate myself for sometimes falling into is "Can I get...." rather than "have"

Re: Incorrectly used phrases
‘Can I get’ seems to be an Americanism - so ubiquitous over there I didn’t feel wrong saying it myself. Better in the context of something else American, such as ‘Can I get the check’.
