992 S/T

Post by KiwiDave »

Predictably fucking awesome and I would probably sell my testicles to own one. And they're great testicles.

Also Tom Ford's faux childish impishness is a poor substitute for the Harris and Catchpole conversations with AP we all need.

Lots to like about that! 8-)

I sneered a little at the celebration of a 40kg weight saving - I think you are very unlikely to notice that (less than 3%) reduction, and I certainly don't believe you'd notice it as you first drive off the parking lot (as implied), but I am sure it will be a contributory factor in a finely honed overall package.

Most importantly it gives the market another special 911 to get excited about, another special 911 for the speculators to throw their orders in for, and another special 911 that the dealerships get to decide who is allowed to own. A business model that's becoming as iconic as the 911 itself.

This is a road-biased 992 which has GT3 RS underpinnings. I remember Harry Metcalfe's review of the 992 GT3 RS where he basically said it wasn't suited to driving on the road. It's a no from me. Normal Touring would be preferable by a long way.

I'l wait to read some reviews before placing my order. He's keen to stress that it's very much road as opposed to track biased - which is encouraging.

From a styling perspective, I'd like to see one without the chrome finish around the windows. (Black chrome maybe?).

Is it essentially the 911R in 992 form with a slightly different name? It does look good, and I'd love to have one though. Shame I lack the funds

I don't really get the name, is it a T or an S or somewhere between the two, which would put it fairly middling in the range of 911s. But it's actually high up in the range.

Basically, it's a shit name.

It's a model from the late 60s according to the Top Gear article..

"Designed by Porsche as a present to itself on the 60th anniversary of the 911 (there’s 1,963 planned in honour of the birth year), the S/T revives a grand old name from 1969 when a 911 S was sprinkled with a touch of motorsport fairy dust to become the S/T - a fearsome competition car that did without the aid of big wings and hefty aero."

Yes the S/T was a car from back in the late 60s through to very early 70s - essentially the forerunner to the 73 RS. I don't think it was ever a "model" however, but more an extensive options pack from the factory to prep the car for racing.

Some were quite funny things to look at as they had standard fuchs at the front and wider minilites at the rear as the wider fuchs only became available later in the 70s.

I need to watch the full thing but I agree that they're scraping the barrel with this slightly as the S/T was a track based version of the normal road car, which is exactly what the GT3 models are and as people have said, if you want that without the wing then that would be a GT3 Touring... it just seems unnecessary to have an RS suspension'd model without a wing.

I think you'll find it's a name that evokes powerful synergies, playfully echoing back with a nod to the iconic : inspired by paying homage to the (respectfully) re-imagined classic names. Much like the pet name @KiwiDave uses for his testicles.

Those all sound like lovely stories, but did the old 1969 ST ever have the very odd forward slash in their name? That's the weird bit that stops it being an "ST" and makes it an "S or a T" depending on something else presumably?

On maybe it's like in poetry where the slash is a new line, so it's really a:

911 S
T

I suspect ST may be a Ford trademark now. Hence the S/T.

ah yes, maybe they're following ford naming traditions now. The RS is the range topper, the ST is an every day sporty one, the S is mid range, then presumably there's going to be a "popular" or maybe "active" base spec one due soon? Jobbo can hold out for the "ghia" spec.

It's leveraging the metric equivalent of BHP - ie everyone's favourite metric : PS. As you know, this stands for PferdStarke - ie "Horse Strength". They dropped the P as it was too blatant, and retained only the S. The T stands for Tonne obviously. S/T is a playfully coded expression of their focus on power to weight ratio, and it is - quite frankly - Blue Steel genius.

I saw a 991 GT3 parked up the other day and it just reminded me how stupid a lot of the 992 GT styling is.

Which is funny as when the 991 first came out I thought it looked like one of those car caricatures of a 997.

maybe they could do one that looked like a sporty top of the range one but put a weedy engine in it and badge it "eclipse"?

I saw not 1 but 2 991 GT2 RS's on the M6 toll a few weeks back. 8-)

They were making good pace without being stupid.
