I'd never heard of him, however I am ridiculously impressed with his drumming, absolutely one of the best.

He's a drummer's drummer - I don't know a single drummer anywhere who doesn't rate him very highly. Can play absolutely anything (he followed Vinnie Colaiuta with Sting for instance) and is one of the most recorded drummers alive right now. Hundreds and hundreds of different tracks and albums in places you'd never expect. Most importantly, those who know him reckon he's a really nice bloke.
He has a habit from what I can see of not committing to bands 100%, so he can have his options open to move around different gigs. Rumour has it he's on a retainer from the Foos to be their live drummer, which is interesting wording, perhaps suggesting Dave continues to do the studio stuff. However, even in that 45min live stream they did at the start of the week, you can see he's taken what Dave and Taylor have done and added a healthy dose of something different into it already - it would be awesome to see him actually part of the process of writing new material.
Maybe just with the gravity of taking on the gig, they want a long trial period before going all in and making him a fully fledged band member point blank. If anyone goes to any of their shows from here on and sees him live, they won't be disappointed with him at all.

I'd heard of him but couldn't have told you why. So I just went and read his Wiki page. It's extensive:
Nine inch Nails & A Perfect Circle are presumably where I'd remembered the name from.

Oh wow, he was also in Guns and Roses for three years during the absolute lowest point in their entire history although ironically, despite it being the band's low point, being hired by Axl Rose is rather high accolade.

You go through his collab/session/live/contribution lists and basically if you like rock at all, he's probably worked with someone you know and like.
Busy chap!

I think he’s going to be just fine. In this week’s livestream you can see how he’s already influenced some changes to ‘classic’ songs. And, boy, can he play! He was rock solid in the stream.
Over 400 album credits to his name and very much in demand.
I watched him talking about his G’n’R phase - he basically sat around for weeks while Axl messed about.
