....than straight spokes would?

At the risk of offending someone somewhere - I generally don't love any turbine-style wheels as they invariably look better on one side of a car than the other.

Even when they are handed to avoid this - like these ones that were available for the Evora - don't non-twisty designs just look "better"?

I can think of one exception which proves your rule:


The Puma would look odd with straight versions of those but otherwise, bang on. The Porsche 996 came on various alloys, plenty of which were twisty, and the nicest remain the 18" Carrera alloys which weren't:

As a general rule I agree, but I'd still have these in a 996.

That's even more wrong Duncs - those alloys always go with a wide body (Turbo or C4S). The mk2 GT3 alloys in the background are vastly nicer too.

I've never really thought of those Turbo ones as being "twisty" but I see what you mean.

Those first examples from Lotus are utterly horrid though.

I would respectfully disagree They're both nice and completely different things. Williams Speedlines on a 1.8 16v would be affront

The Williams is hardly a different thing - same bodywork, for a start.

Car Magazine had a 16v on silver versions of the gold Williams alloys before the Williams appeared, and they're perfect on it.

I agree that the GT3 ones are much nicer, but I do like those wheels on 911s all the same. I don't know which wheels go with which variant (clearly NCG), IIRC you got something similar on 993.

Yeah the 993 Turbo has similar looking wheels, they have more of a twist in the spokes though.

Here's the pre-facelift 996 with the optional 18s in the same design which everyone specced:



The ones you posted were standard on the 996 Turbo and C4S Duncs, but they're flatter than the above - and more attractive, I think. They were also available in a narrower version as an option on the 986.2 Boxster.

The pre-facelift 996 on 17"s is a good example of where twists are better actually:

those are just ugly wheels. The twisted ones are marginally better, but still wrong imo.
