My 2005 premium was £18.4K list but I bought a pre registered one for £17k. It made sense at that sort of cost.

I read in Autocar yesterday that they're only importing 100s rather than 1000s because of emissions so that's probably why it's 47k. They can charge what they like and enough people will still buy them I guess.

It's nearly 10k more than the last version but for the depth of engineering, I actually don't think it's really overpriced.

what engineering? It's got the same engine, gearbox, suspension... what am I missing?

I think it was £15995 with only a couple of options (air-con, metallic). I paid £16,900 +/- a few quid, IIRC, for a red one with air-con on 1 March 2002. Fuck, over 20 years ago

Even though a 2 EV household, I do feel sad about the end of ICE hot hatch (what's left now? Ford, VW, Hyundai, Honda. RS3's etc don't count really). Most of my youth was spent in some form of fast hatch. If I was in the market I would still be tempted even at £47k.

Yeah I was just thinking that Honda can't be doing well with their average fleet emissions as they only sell 1 EV which nobody buys. The rest of the Honda range are "self charging hybrids" which barely make a dent in emissions. Surprised how far Honda have fallen behind, they used to lead the way with hybrids and supercars and then just forgot about it and spent a decade making shit.

Shame about the price as it's the first Civic Type R that I can remember liking for a very long time.

I was chatting with my BIL the other day about this as well. Bought my 197 new in 2009 and it was about £14k IIRC. Again, probably around 50% of my salary at the time. No way is £50k half my salary now! And yes, that would put you right into the sphere of far more interesting machinery.

Is this just reflective of the fact that so few people actually buy cars anymore? Instead they're just leased or PCPd.

I like it, if someone offered me this or A45/RS3 I'd take this even if they were the same price (which they aren't by a chunk).

M2 would be hard to ignore but is not in the same price bracket either (it's same money as RS3/A45 I believe).

Not saying it's good value by any stretch, and obviously you're going to lose a game of top trumps in the pub to RS3 or A45 owners, but that's not something that would bother me.

What's a new Golf R? Again, this is more appealing for me.

So in terms of its bracket we're talking M240i (£48k), Golf R (£42k?), CTR (£47k). Roughly.

Looks like maybe £5k overpriced but may well be more fun to drive or more desirable depending on what you're into.

Edit - I don't know which cars have 'must have' options (if any), that may change that picture obvs.

The base FK8 (previous gen) started at 31k and prices are still strong but that's skewed by the current situation a bit I'd imagine.

Outside of a Caterham it's definitely on my list but not at the price. Bring on the recession.
