OK, so with the caveat that it's often a fools errand to "recommend" a new car to someone, this post is more to canvas ideas

Options I may not have considered

Parameters:
- c£40k budget
- will be the only car
- will have to be street parked (although a nice street, with other nice cars - Boxster, Bentley, G-Wagon etc)
- won't be used for commuting
- a 2 seater may be an option, but some degree of practicality may be good
- don't really want to buy brand new (and take a huge depreciation hit)
- nothing too big
- no hybrids/electrics
- manuel would be nice, but not essential

Some thoughts so far:
- a manual M2 Comp
- Boxster
- older 911 of some ilk (almost too much choice/confusion)
- Alpine
- recent 540i (we do quite a lot of long, motorway drives)

What else could I be thinking about?

Wow, was not expecting that as an option!

I've had my Vantage just over five years now. It's been a great car. Only a two seater but the boot is fairly decent. DB9 gets you some laughably small rear seats, although they're still better than a 911 !

Or a Rapide ? Are they under £40k now ?

You’ve already identified some good options and agree with SJ on the Astons.

XKR and F-Type? There are a few manuel 6-pot F-Types out there.

Also - predictably:





It’s not a 2+2 in the way an RX8 is (which could fit 4 adults in comfort) but the rear space is very useful. Have carried on the rear seats without too much complaint over the years
- fully grown adult lady with her equally tall 15yr old daughter for about 15mins
- reasonably large dugs (35kg)
- a 285/30/20 rear tyre
- properly big suitcase

Looks like the Mustang would be in your budget, I'd be tempted by that or a 997 Carrera S.

Oh yeah, I've also been looking (on AutoTrader anyway) at v8 manuel R8s as well...

I'd go XFR or RS or XJ Supersport over an XKR if you need rear seats.

I went to see a XKR last week and the rear seats aren't really usable, I'm 6'1 and my 6 year old couldn't sit behind me in his car seat.

How much are Giulia quadriflololos or whatever they're called used?

Yeah Lotus are still struggling to shake off their historical rep for fragility. Evora obvs uses the Toyota 3.5 V6 & box. Diff cams & map either NA or with poopercharger, but the drivetrain is robust.

You see “higher than average miles, but far from leggy” V10 R8’s in the £40k’s too. I like far more than the V8’s but that’s just me.

That would be tempting too, I think they look great and they were generally well liked at launch iirc.

Cayman GTS? I think buying anything at £40k which isn't noted for low depreciation is dangerous with used prices as high as they are. At least with a Porsche you should be relatively safe.

As nice as the manual may be, they're too expensive just yet, I'd have to limit myself to a used/auto one...
