Really no point in me playing this in the normal way

so we'll do this:
Guess (what's wrong with) the new (silver grey MINI Cooper S Clubman) Car (that I paid £1300 for)
Seller says it loses water but he doesn't know why. First guess is head gasket.

I'll put a shiny penny on the water pump - it's old enough to have had it replaced on the cheap, and it not having been installed properly, and the old owner knowing damned well because they're the one who did it

Came close to buying one of these last week, great condition, reasonable miles but smokes occasionally when hot. Looking into it it's a common issue and can be more than they're worth to fix. I did wonder about buying it and running it till it got too bad then breaking it.

Maybe the car is actually Jesus and has been turning the water into wine on the quiet and then selling it to the local church?

Thermostat housing or coolant pipes sagging and catching over the gear cables.
I have a set of N14 Silicon Hoses somewhere, I'll have a look for them.

I think we have a provisional winner !
The engine starts & runs fine. No sign of oil/water mixing and no over-pressurising of the coolant. Looking underneath, coolant drips steadily from the engine/gearbox joint. Looking from the top, after removing intake ducting, there is a puddle of coolant visible on top of the gearbox - directly below the thermostat. A new thermostat is £60. I'll get one ordered. If that's all it needs then I will be rather pleased
It'll need some other stuff for sure, I'm not totally off the hook. There are four different brands of tyre on there for a start. The nav needs updating and right now doesn't recognise where it is so that's something to investigate. And apart from putting it on the trailer I've not driven it so I'll reserve judgement for now.

I really like the clubman, looks like you may have picked up a bargain. Early cars have a tensioner issue apparently but your well accustomed now

Have you added "Fix the droop on the sporty front fog light?" to teh list?
I imagine twice the power that my clubman had would make it significantly more entertaining.

£1300 is a no brainer. The benefits of having a trailer!

Fog light has a broken bolt and the remainder needs drilling out. Or I might just take them off.
WRT to power & entertainment, yes

This should be 174hp. My wife's convertible is the updated version with 184hp and it does go nicely, but the convertible shell is a bit wobbly. I'm very much looking forward to driving this one.
