I guess they’re getting more press for killing the name, and in the future from all the ‘new fiesta / fiesta replacement’ articles than they would have got just by releasing another small car and calling it a fiesta.

I have fond memories of my wife buying a 1.25 Zetec in Thistle Purple. It wasn't long after we first met circa 2000, it looked great and was a hoot to drive, circa £7k brand new

I can't even find a stock photo of a Mk5 in that colour now !

I passed my test in a '97 1.25 zetec- I was going to say that's pretty much where my interest in fiestas ended, but we've had two 2005 2.0 STs since.

Small ICE cars are tricky to make now, partly not seen as desirable but also fleet average CO2 plus expectations of decent safety and kit but then people say "HOW MUCH for a Fiesta???". Easier upsell into a new model with more room and a bit more height. The cheaper end is dominated by models based on shared platforms with better economies of scale.

The Escort was the mainstay of the Ford range for decades, sold millions and the name got killed off too - but as there was something good replacing it no-one really cared.

That was because of how poor the mk5 was, tainting the Escort name, and Ford wanting to distance its replacement from it.
It seems a shame it's going. I guess other manufacturers have safety in numbers because they can share the undergubbins across more models (e.g. 208/Corsa/C3 Aircross/etc).

Can, but profitably?

208 is on a massively expensive modular platform (even then only 60% funded by Stellantis, rest from China) that was designed for EV from the outset. It's shared by loads of brands and models, so they get the scale they need to recoup that investment.

Ford are having to "collaborate" (pay £££) with VW to use the MEB platform, currently used for the ID cars and things like the Enyaq. Don't think it shrinks down to Fiesta sort of size though.

I'm a fan of the Honda e, indeed a massive shame it's priced so high and there are no decent lease deals.
