Imaginary choice

The year is 2023. Summer. Lovely day with only a slight breeze. 25DegC with only a few wispy clouds high in the sky. The birds are singing and you are in good health and good spirits. Had some jiggy-jiggy last night with your lady/man friend.

You've taken some time off to go to an event at the Spa-Francorchamps racing circuit in Belgiumland, when you bump into an old friend of a friend of a friend- Tarquin - at the circuit.

Tarquin inherited a lot of monies, and is in a bit of a pickle as he has simply entered too many of his classic racing vehicles into the event. He needs someone to cover one of the races for him. He's desperate - will pay you £10k (cash - used notes) for your trouble. Luckily you got your racing license quite recently/some time ago (delete as appropriate), you have your racing pyjamas, helmet and all that other shizzle in the boot of your car, and Tarquin is happy to take the risk that you might bend a vehicle through unfamiliarity. C'est la vie, carpe diem and all that stuff what what.

Each race involves a 15min practices session, 15mins qualifying, and then a 15-lap race.

You've called your mum, and she say's you're allowed. But only one race....

What do you pick? (Note: any whining about missing options comes with a 3 week forum ban from Matt).

190 EVO2 in silver, no livery, starting from the back of the grid.

Dave!

From the back of the grid so I don’t get in everyone else’s way for a few laps 😂

Where’s the option for “I’d rather stay at home and argue on the internet” ?

3 for me. I’d win the race and bang Tarquin’s supermodel girlfriend too in lieu of the inconvenience.

I ran out of options :?

Now Steve - your question sounded a bit like a whine… but since it wasn’t about race car options I may have missed, I spoke to Matt and he applied a 40mins ban only. You should be able to post again once you read this….

Where's the option for "whatever I will fit into?"

I would usually go for something a bit older but I picked V10 F1. I’d want as much aero as possible, see if I can make myself blackout through Eau Rouge

E30 / rs500 era because they look like cars I’d stand a chance of driving half decently ( in my head at least ) without being terrifying. Although a mid 90s e36 supertouring would be my preference. They were pretty successful at spa too…

Just for the experience of a few laps it would be a v10 era f1 car though.

I chose before reading the post, but I’d still rather drive a Group B car out of all of them, even if it’s round Spa.

Using the Wikipedia definition of touring cars
Touring car racing is a motorsport road racing competition with heavily modified road-going cars.
I’m throwing this into the mix

Permission granted.

I was soooo close to voting for a Lotus Cortina. Looks like immense fun and pure handling. 8-)

But then I couldn’t get the idea of a Sauber C9 out of my brain…. :?

I went with classic touring cars - it's less like that I'd bin them in the first corner having massively over/underestimated what they're capable of, because they're closer to a regular road car than the rest - even the 60s supercars, which would probably seem undertyred on a track.

I'm pretty sure anything else on the list would end up in the armco within 15 seconds with me behind the wheel, but I could probably pedal a Cortina for a few laps before overcooking it

10 for me, that era of Le Mans cars was ace and I feel they'd be a touch less scary than an F1 car.

For my amusement - which one. (I’ve already highlighted that the C9 would be my choice - almost certainly driven by 90’s footage on Grandstand showing in-car footage from a jag (XJR9 presumably) which looked unbelievably fast…. Until a C9 overtook and romped away).

From my experience - purely sim racing in my undercrackers the old turbo F1 cars are the most scary - shit tyres and no power then a load of boost.

Then it’s Group C - similar to above but a tiny bit more tame.

V10 F1 cars feel the nicest to drive, they have little torque and traction control so don’t feel like they’ll kill you.

Anything really classic on crossply tyres just feels shit.

C9 would be great, 787b is one that springs to mind that I'd be tempted by.

6. I really want a go in the XJS.

Ideally, I'd like a go in the BTCC 155 as that's the car that ignited my petrolheadery but as it's not on the list, I'm going to seduce Tarquin's mum while insisting on calling him Tarquini.

The 155 would be my choice but in dtm v6 spec with ridiculous exhausts. But I didn’t state it for fear incurring the wrath of mik
