They've not really understood the assignment have they. If you make an SUV, don't just make a coupe that looks a bit like an SUV, the point of an SUV is that it's useable - that's virtually in the name.

Congrats to Ferrari for taking the least hideous SUV crown from Aston Martin.

Looks ok for what it is. Will go insanely fast and has some trick tech instead of anti-roll bars. But like @Rich B says, how on earth does that qualify as an SUV? Or are we now classing anything where they've basically jacked up the ride height as an SUV. The new Puma for example and every other car that's slowly creeping up in size and height?

That's pretty much my understanding. I blame the X6 for starting this trend for stoopid ridiculously inflated "Coupe's". And then all the soft-roaders.

A few years back I was stuck in London when snow was cancelling all the flights and the trains were all stuck somewhere around Carlisle. I switched plans and hired a car - specifically requesting a 4x4. They offered a Quasquai - fine - but I checked "these come as two and four wheel drive - it needs to be a 4wd". I was assured that it was, but had a suspicion the person at the desk had no idea what 4wd was. Thankfully the roads from London to Glasgow were all clear and I didn't need any extraordinary vehicle capabilities to make the trip. Until I got to the hire car returns lot at Glasgow Airport - which was under about 30cm of snow. At which point it became very clear the Quashquai was a FWD "SUV" only.

Another pointless vehicle that'll sell like hot cakes. I'm sure there's a healthy order book already.

The thing is, Lambo made the urus, which is basically a proper family car, with 3 folding seats, big boot, etc... same with the Porsche Cayenne, Aston DBX, (and the Rolls Royce Cullinan, Bentayga), etc... all could be realistically used as family cars.

This is just an FF with slightly bigger rear seats and suicide doors and a tiny boot. No one will use it as a family car so they've written off most of the audience who want an SUV. All that's left is normal Ferrari buyers, so it's basically just a straight replacement for the GTC/FF.

How successful is the Urus? I don't think I've seen any around except with nasty Mansory-alike modifications and hideous aftermarket wheels and wraps. They aren't being used as family transport. You'd buy a Cayenne Turbo S or RS Q8 if you wanted the ability without the bling. So I think Ferrari may well have hit their market just right.

I saw an Urus in town the other day, it was being driven by the kind of younger guy you'd usually see popping and farting around the city centre in a RS Audi though.

Saw one of those coupe roof Cayennes too, what an abomination.

It still has to be a FFRR if you're thinking about spending house money on a 4x4 doesn't it.

I followed one the other day along a few miles of unclassified road that is *just* wide enough for two cars. I dropped back as they were rounding blind bends in the middle of the road - despite 90% of the tarmac sporting a centreline. Amazingly nothing came the other way, but I was braced for impact the whole time.

They're very popular in London, I'd say I see at least 5 new ones every day and the usual 20 parked on the side of residential roads.

First thoughts were the engine is wrong. Ideally you want a turbocharged unit for low down power when using a trailer. But you're right, that's not the target audience at all.

To be fair to Ferrari, they're not labelling this as an SUV (according to Autocar).

Ferrari know their clientele very well, the order books will be full. Nobody cares if it's an SUV or not.

I quite like the Cayenne coupe and Audi Q8, to be fair. In unmodified form anyway.

I guess it can seat four people and a couple of overnight bags, but its not like they don't have another car that can do that. Its just really weird they haven't made the boot bigger.
