Car for Mini Mike

The time has come... my boy needs a car. And he actually does need a car as he's gone and got himself an apprenticeship, so will need to be mobile.

Am thinking a budget of 2-3K to get something suitably underpowered which he can get insured-for.

What's the thoughts on a suitable first car? Did you do this recently @mik or did I imagine that?

Go onto autotrader, find a load of cars you think might work in your budget, go on gocompare, do quotes for each using the reg numbers off AT.

Then cry at how crazy they are!

So it looks like insurance is cheap until he passes his test which makes sense as he'll always be supervised until then.

You can do a search on AT for low insurance groups. Unless you want to be paying another £3k on insurance, it's worth doing the checks.

It is about finding the odd machinery that is way out of normal. ISTR a guy on Boatshoes that bought an XJR at 18 and it was surprisingly affordable compared to the Corsas and Fiestas.

That was my wife's first car.... it got broken into outside our flat and they stole the CD player out of it along with her CDs...

... apart from her Steps CD which they left on the passenger seat.

My daughter was a pain in the arse and I ended up spending way to much time looking at cars and insurance with her.

In summary anything small and sub 1400cc was circa £350 whilst learning and £1300 when she's passes +/- 10%.

She's has a MiTo Junior Twinair which is fun to drive and nippy at 105hp for a first car but not a particularly easy car to learn in.

My brother in-law who was a driving instructor likes Minis and had a few.

I'd also recommend booking his test asap as they are issuing dates 4 or 5 months away and if he's progressing check online for cancellations to bring it forward.
