Going to Manchester on Friday for the night and fancy a good steak.
Any recommendations?? Don’t mind spending some money but needs to be reasonably casual as we’ll have a 15 year old with us (who’ll have a rare Filet)

Streaking is frowned upon by the local constabulary

Not been but heard it's good. Don't really get over these days and when I did it was West Didsbury which isn't town town
Hawksmoor

Haven't been in years but I used to enjoy Gaucho on Deansgate.
If you fancy getting down with the youth, this place is fun

The burgers are decent, I can vouch.

Yes Mervin - staying in the Novotel on Portland Street so pretty central.

Hawksmoor is the one the Southern critics fawn over.
Alternatively you've got:
El Gato Negro - a great tapas place. Does classic tapas properly but also blends in local twists on it.
Tast - Catolonian tapas - not tried this one yet. Pep Guardiola's gaff
La Bandera - another great tapas. Fairly under the radar but a good one
Canto - guess what? It's tapas again. From same guy that owns El Rato but this is more med cuisine.
Adam Reid at the French. Possibly a touch formal for what you're after.
63 Degrees - modern European known for its great chicken
Habas - middle eastern cuisine. Owned by El Gato guy again
The Bull and Bear - Tom Kerridges gaff. Supposed to be good but looks pricey to me

I should probably have qualified that - there are a lot of Spanish people in Manchester and clearly they weren't happy with the likes of La Tasca to serve their needs!

It's Gaucho or Hawksmoor - Herself's deciding...

Those would be my picks! Although I would probably settle on Hawksmoor, but because of the cocktails etc.

Hawksmoor then for me out of those two. Argentinian beef is a bit shit - well, at least the majority of the stuff that is exported. Not that I know where Hawksmoor's comes from.
I'd still recommend paying a visit to the bar at El Gato Negro - it's a really buzzing place. Plus you get a slice of Iberico on a skewer in your Bloody Mary

Could we do lunch in El Gato Negro and dinner in Hawksmoor ??

Why not? El Gato is 3 storeys so plenty of options. Bar and bar food on ground floor (I think it's standing room only), restaurant on 1st and rooftop restaurant and bar on top I think.
Their Lomo Iberico is food of the gods - although not one for people that have an aversion to slightly pink pork...fnar

Gauchos in London these days tend to be exclusively filled with daytripping chavs trying to impress their girl, or an Essex hen do.
Given that they’re similar money I don’t consider Gaucho to be in the same league.
I remember when the first hawksmoor opened in Spitalfields and it was 50% off for the month on food and drinks. I might have had a lot of steak and whisky cocktails that month!

Was going to say that it was odd that the two main suggestions were big chains but then saw Swerv's reply. Shit out of luck if you don't like tapas
